Correa Votes Against GOP Attempt to Put Consumer Protections at Risk

Representative Lou Correa (D-CA) voted against the Republican-led Unlocking Our Domestic LNG Potential Act of 2024 and released the following statement on February 15, 2024:

“I remain concerned about eliminating the requirement that our energy exports and imports be ‘consistent with the public interest’. This standard has been in place to protect consumers for almost a century—and losing this safeguard would not be in the nation’s best interest,” Correa said. “It also takes away the Department of Energy’s authority to act in times of crisis or unforeseen circumstances. With this change, we risk negatively impacting our manufacturing competitiveness, our economic growth, and our national security. But let me be clear: LNG exports are and must continue to be, an integral part of American energy independence, and I will continue to support them.”

Last week, Correa led 8 members of the Blue Dog Coalition in a letter to President Joe Biden, raising alarm over his Administration’s announced pause on approvals for new U.S. liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports. He highlighted that the U.S. LNG industry supports millions of good-paying American jobs and contributes trillions to the national GDP and urged the “Administration to reconsider the immediate pause and allow current applications to resume the approval process.”

He has spent his career fighting to protect the American Dream and ensure anyone can reach the middle class, just as he did. In 2016, Lou was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives to continue his work by representing the community he has spent the past 20 years serving, fighting to give everyone access to the same opportunity he had. Congressman Correa is committed to working across party lines to strengthen the middle class and give everyone a shot at the American Dream by investing in education, healthcare, and our fading infrastructure, and has introduced legislation to protect the legal rights of immigrants, care for veterans, and fight against the wasteful spending of taxpayer money.

  1. This press release is unintelligible. Who is Correa fighting, the GOP or Biden? And BTW, regurgitating politician’s press releases verbatim and giving the Communications Director a byline isn’t independent and it isn’t news.

  2. New research from Cornell University released in Nov 2023 showed “that liquefied natural gas (LNG) has an even bigger climate footprint than burning coal. The analysis has amplified opposition to a major gas project on the Gulf Coast and scrutiny from Congress on the U.S. as the world’s top exporter of LNG.”
This is not good news for global climate crisis. Thanks for letting us know that Correa is supporting continued LGN exports and that the Biden Administration is pausing new exports. I didn’t know that and think Correa is on the wrong side and will be writing him about that and thanking Biden who I hope will make the pause permanent.

      • Thank you for your critique. I appreciate that you are trying to make the Observer better.

          • Sorry to read that you will be disappointed once again as I am learning from your critique. I do value your contribution. I think that your critique either helps me change or helps me solidify my position and make my argument stronger. I also learn a lot about you.

      • Zenger – I agree that politicians put out self-serving info – but – as in this case – I think they have an odd sense of what the public wants. That stupid letter from Blue Dogs and Correa totally pisses me off. But – without him outing himself and Saskia printing it – I, and I am guessing many others, would not even be aware of it. So I am happy she printed it. Now I can at least register my opposition.

        • “I think they have an odd sense of what the public wants.”

Neither here nor there. It’s not news and Communications Directors shouldn’t be getting a byline – unless it’s in an opinion format and they are identified by their job. That’s transparency.
