Plan to attend the Patrons of the Library’s Annual Meeting, which will be held in Pollak Library North (PLN), Room 130, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on May 4.

Our guest speaker will be Ann Carlson, who has just completed three years in Washington, D.C., as the Director of the National Highway Safety Administration, reporting directly to Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg.

President Biden appointed her as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s chief counsel from January 2021 to September 2022 and then appointed her as Acting Administrator in September 2022. Among many decisions, she was responsible for the Tesla motor recall.

Ms. Carlson returned to UCLA in February 2024, where she is the Shirley Shapiro Professor of Environmental Law. She is currently writing a book tentatively titled “How Los Angeles Cleaned Up Its Air.”
