Fullerton City Council Proclaimed April as American Muslim Appreciation and Awareness Month

Fullerton City Council proclaimed April as American Muslim Appreciation and Awareness Month at the April 16 city council meeting.

The City of Fullerton is home to many prominent Muslim residents who continue to contribute significantly to the City, the State of California, and the United States as business owners, legal, Doctors, engineers, teachers, farmers, civil rights leaders, humanitarians, athletes, and in many other capacities.

The history of Islam in this country dates back to before its founding, originating with enslaved Africans who brought their Muslim beliefs with them to the Americas and who contributed in numerous ways to the founding of the nation. Today, approximately 1 million American Muslims reside in California—the highest number of any state in the United States.

The contributions of American Muslims to charitable organizations are significant and far-reaching. They provide medical assistance, family services, scholastic supplies, and before and after school programs, benefiting people from all faiths and backgrounds in California, the United States, and worldwide. Their efforts also extend to feeding the hungry and providing recuperation efforts following natural disasters. The Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) serves a diverse Muslim community from all backgrounds within Fullerton, empowering community members to be civically engaged by providing Immigration Services and supporting youth empowerment while addressing incidences of hate that continue to impact the Muslim community.

Incidences of hate continue to impact the Muslim community; last year, CAIR California received over 500 incidents claims ranging from hate crimes, mosque vandalism, school bullying, workplace and housing discrimination, and hate speech targeting Muslims. The City Council acknowledges the importance of local government in advocating for peace and justice, understanding that Muslims everywhere deserve to live in peace and safety.

Fullerton’s diverse organizations, including the Fullerton Muslim Community Center, ICNA Relief, and Olive Community Services, play vital roles in preserving cultural identity, providing compassionate services, and fostering inclusive environments for the betterment of the community. The City also recognizes the innovative efforts of local businesses such as Fullerton IHOP, owned by a Muslim franchise company for pioneering the introduction of a Halal menu, Qamaria Yemeni Coffee, Khan Saab Desi, Bundoo Khan, and Meridian Qube Sports Clubs for enriching our culinary landscape and community spirit. Other Muslim community members were asked to stand in support.

  1. Another meaningless article that is not news and only serves to promote an ideology. You should rename your “newspaper” Pravda or the Ministry of Propaganda.

    • in a time of rampant Islamophobia can we not have one article honoring the community?

  2. How else would they get to publish a pic of their wonderboy Ahmad that’s not a selfie?

      • Guess you haven’t been subject to his social media, which is one glorified selfie after another…more than 50…

        • can’t argue with that point, more focus on the actual community itself would be useful – a small point, but still something to consider

  3. Dear Mike Cox and Oscar Wilder,
feel free to stop tuning in if articles aren’t interesting to you. Your comments continue to be abusive and really show anyone reading them who you are.

    • How are my comments “abusive” exactly? I would appreciate an explanation because opinions are all you offer. Seems a good deal of the cat calling the kettle black.

    • Sharon – I respect your fortitude in responding to comments made in bad faith. May I suggest another mode of (in)action: stop feeding the trolls. Don’t waste your time with snarky, worthless comments that don’t further discussion. The general public reading the Observer website can identify the riff raff for what it is.

      • Thank you Amy – I will take your advice and give up on trying to help them listen to facts. Also want to say I really appreciate your comments that always add something valuable to the discussion.
