Ten senior Assisteens celebrated their years of service to the community at a formal event on April 26

Assisteens, an auxiliary of the Assistance League of Fullerton, began in 1964 to introduce members’ daughters to the world of helping others. The program has grown beyond members’ daughters and granddaughters to include more young people in the community – currently a group 70 strong.

The Assisteens Auxiliary includes seventh through twelfth graders involved in philanthropic and social events within the community. The purpose of the Assisteens is to provide its members with a program that creates leadership opportunities and expands members’ awareness of the needs of others and the positive nature of providing philanthropic service. It is also a great way to make new and lasting friendships. Assisteens is open to teens in the Fullerton area. New members are welcomed in June and may join until the beginning of their tenth-grade year.

Assisteens has logged 2,914 volunteer hours this year, and 27 girls earned Presidential Volunteer Service Awards. The Assisteen members earn money for their community service programs by staffing the Assistance League Thrift Shop on Saturdays. They help the Chapter with Taste of the Town and the ALPHA auxiliary with their A Day of Authors event. The Assisteens have also administered multiple philanthropic programs this year.

Assisteen Chair Elizabeth Timmerman commented on a favorite activity: “I have enjoyed the five years I have been part of the Assisteens program. My favorite project has always been the Christmas Party for the Boys and Girls Club; there is no greater gift than seeing the look on the kids’ faces when they get to open the presents we purchase that Santa delivers. I believe we all have a duty to give back to our communities, and the more we give, the more we receive.”
