James Cho celebrated announcing his candidacy with friends and family at Eggspresso, a local Korean-owned business across from Laguna Road Elementary School. James attended Sunset Lane, Laguna Road, Parks Junior High, and Sunny Hills High School, growing up in Fullerton.
Cho’s journey is a testament to his diverse experiences and adaptability. After graduating from UC Irvine, he served as a Second Lieutenant in the Air Force, deploying to the Horn of Africa, Afghanistan, and Iraq. He then pursued a law degree at Berkeley Law School, practiced law, and later returned to the military to attend the United States Air Force Weapons School and work in the Pentagon. Today, he continues to serve as a Lieutenant Colonel at March Air Reserve Base in Riverside County.
Cho’s dedication to public service is evident in his professional achievements. Before returning to Fullerton to start a family, he worked on Capitol Hill on the United States Senate Veterans Affairs Committee. There, he played a crucial role as counsel for the PACT Act. This landmark legislation significantly expanded veteran health care and benefits, including long-ignored conditions for Vietnam-era veterans. Currently, he works for the County of Orange Social Services Agency, where he continues to make a difference in the lives of low-income families and victims of child or elder abuse.
Cho is running because he believes it’s time for a fresh voice. The Fullerton School Board now runs “by-district” elections, meaning Fullerton residents vote for different people depending on where they live. His childhood district is majority Asian, with over one in three Korean households. That district, however, has been represented by the same person since he was in elementary school nearly thirty years ago. James hopes to better represent working families in the district with children still in Fullerton public schools.

Is Sugarman not running?
He’s running against her. Sparse crowd. Doubt he has a snowball’s chance in h-e double hockey sticks.
I have had the honor and privilege to meet Mr. Cho and have witnessed first hand his dedication and passion. He attended one of our elementary school’s Foundation meetings earlier this year. Since then, he has come to all of our meetings and has helped our school immensely by volunteering for our events and donating his time to help our Foundation gain the traction we so desperately need. He truly cares about our schools and our kids. I’m not sure if I’m within the voting boundary, but if I am, he has my vote. He is amazing!
