In Case You Missed It: May 30-June 11, 2024

• June 10: Hamas accepts resolution drafted by Egypt, Qatar, and the US for immediate ceasefire in Gaza at the UN Security Council. According to UN representative from the US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield,  Israel is on board with the 3-phase plan, which starts with an immediate 6-week ceasefire, return of hostages and prisoners on both sides, humanitarian aid, pull out of Israeli forces, return of Palestinians to their homes, rebuilding, and negotiations for a permanent ceasefire and two-state solution.

The vote was 14 to 0. Russia abstained.

UN Israeli representative Gilad Erdan was invited to the session but did not attend.

A substitute speaking for Israel said, “Israel is committed to the release of hostages and ending the military capability of terrorist Hamas. Israel regrets the loss of life of civilians in this war started by Hamas. This council should condemn Hamas and demand the return of hostages.”

Palestinian Ambassador Riyad Mansour spoke after the session, saying that Palestinians want the ceasefire and will work through legal means in the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court to hold those responsible for the genocide to account and that they will continue to work towards a free Palestine solution. He pointed out that while the Palestinian side had been clear about accepting the resolution, the Israeli side had not been clear.

“We will see what happens in the next few weeks,” Mansour said.

•May 30: Former President Trump, 77, was convicted by a jury on 34 felony counts of falsifying documents to conceal a $130,000 payment to silence a porn star before his 2016 election. Sentencing takes place July 11. He is the first US president to be convicted of a crime.

Four other criminal cases filed against Trump will likely not be heard until after the November 5 election, when he is running as a Republican presidential candidate. Those Federal cases involve illegal attempts to overturn his 2020 election loss and mishandling classified documents. “If elected, Trump could shut down the two federal cases…but could not stop a separate election-subversion case taking place in Georgia,” according to a Reuters report.
