Dear Readers,
My name is Saskia Kennedy. My Grandparents Ralph and Natalie, along with a group of their friends, started the Observer in 1978. My mother, Sharon Kennedy, became the editor when her father, Ralph, died in 1998. In 2020, Sharon retired, and Jessie La Tour became the editor. Jessie, Matt Leslie, and I owned the paper together for a short time in 2021. I am the owner/editor now.
A Little About Me
I spent my childhood traveling on a bus and then settling in a quaint town in Pueblo, Mexico. Every summer and for two weeks in December, I would visit Fullerton until I turned 18 and made the move permanent. There were times when I left and returned to Fullerton.
I have experience working as a hairstylist at a prestigious Vidal Sassoon salon. Later, I worked at Super Cuts at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. Additionally, I had the opportunity to serve as a High Tea attendant to royalty and other dignitaries at the esteemed Broadmoor Hotel.
I’ve had a diverse career background. I’ve owned and managed a children’s boutique in Carmel, worked for Pebble Beach Corporation, served as an accountant at a lumber company, assisted in a design center for home remodeling, managed two restaurants, a coffee house, and an art store. I’ve also driven long haul 18-wheelers and worked for a detective agency.
I painstakingly renovated a charming 100-year-old farmhouse using guidance from YouTube tutorials and This Old House. Throughout the process, I added two new rooms, reinforced the foundation, and undertook numerous other improvements. Concurrently, I successfully obtained an Associate of Arts degree and launched my very own private investigation firm.
I have had a diverse educational journey, having started and stopped college multiple times. I’ve studied a variety of subjects, including psychology, journalism, computer graphics, languages, photography, art, and computer science. I have a deep passion for learning and enjoy exploring new fields of knowledge.
During the pandemic, I moved back to Fullerton, where I am now in charge of the Fullerton Observer, a completely volunteer-run newspaper. Every dollar earned from subscribers and advertisers goes back into creating, printing, distributing, and mailing the paper.
Our purpose is to inform Fullerton residents about political, economic, and social forces which impact their lives. We hope that this knowledge can empower residents to participate in constructive ways to hold these public and private entities accountable, so they serve Fullerton in lawful, transparent, and socially responsible ways.
We seek to promote a sense of community that is inclusive and representative of the diverse values our country is blessed with. We believe that diversity is not just a value but a strength that enriches our community and our reporting.

OMG I thought you were going to say a company like Sinclair bought it. Thank you for your dedication. Local newspapers are a rarity and we are lucky to have The Observer.
Well, that headline caused my heart to flip. I thought you had sold (out?). I should have known better. You follow in and fill in the footsteps of giants. You are a worthy heir to a great tradition.
Thank you for sharing your fascinating story. The Observer is a gem that we are so fortunate to have. I hope you write a memoir some day – I’ll be first in line to read it!
Thank you and your family for a wonderful, local newspaper. Congratulations on your taking the helm. Best of success.
Good luck Saskia.
