Fullerton is a vibrant hub for the arts, thanks in part to the presence of Fullerton College and California State University, Fullerton (CSUF). Both institutions offer a wide scope of art curriculums and opportunities for their students through on-campus galleries. These galleries are open to the public.
Fullerton College
Fullerton College has a long tradition of excellence in the arts. They currently offer several associate degrees and professional training certificate programs. The college also operates an art gallery, presenting student exhibits and serving as training for those interested in museum careers.
Seija Rohkea is the Museum’s full-time Gallery Technician and shares gallery management with Art Professor Jasmine McNeal. She explained the benefits of having a gallery on campus. “Our students have hands-on opportunities to use what they learn in the classroom,” said Rohkea. “We recently loaned a painting from our permanent collection to another museum. Our students helped pack the piece using museum quality materials and processes, along with having a custom crate made for transport.”
The gallery’s permanent collection began in 1972. Since then, each year’s resident artist has contributed a piece to the collection. “Pop Artist Wayne Thiebaud was our first Artist in Residence. He started our collection by donating his painting “Penny Machines,” said Rohkea. “Over the last 50 years, the collection has grown substantially. We often loan out works to other museums and galleries.”
The first exhibition of the school year, “Faculty Exhibition 2024,” will feature work from faculty members across various media and run from Sept 12 – Oct 9, 2024.
The Fullerton College Art Gallery is on campus in Building 1000, Room 1004. The gallery is open Mon – Thurs from 10 am – noon and 2 – 4 pm, Friday visits available upon request. Admission is free.
California State University, Fullerton – College of the Arts
California State University, Fullerton’s College of the Arts is recognized for its Department of Visual Arts and offers Bachelor and Master of Fine Arts degrees in over a dozen specialties. This year has brought an exciting edition to the students’ benefit, the new College of the Arts Galleries.
According to Jennifer Frias, Director and Curator of the College of the Arts Galleries, there are four on-campus galleries within the complex. She explained how the galleries are specifically utilized by the arts program.
“The Nicholas & Lee Begovich Gallery is used for curated exhibits and programs related to classroom studies of contemporary visual culture. The three other galleries, the Marilyn & Jack Duff Gallery, the Stan Mark Ryan (’75) Gallery, and the Leo Freedman Foundation Gallery are artistic laboratories for students pursuing degrees in visual arts to showcase their work,” explained Frias. “These galleries encourage and inspire students to explore new ideas and processes of making art while contributing to the artistic spirit of the campus and community.”

These two Fullerton institutions offer opportunities to educate, inspire, and engage oneself in art. We recommend visits to each to enjoy and experience art in our community being created by new generations.
