It is with great sorrow that Urooj Naveed, the guest editor for the last four issues, experienced a family tragedy on October 8th, 2024. One of the Catalina plane crash victims was Haris Ali, the 33-year-old brother of Urooj Naveed. Her family is devastated by the loss; their world is turned upside down by this sudden and tragic event. No one expects to lose a brother or son so young and so suddenly. Haris was the family’s primary breadwinner. His money is tied up in his business, and his accounts are frozen until the probate is completed.
In addition to the funeral costs, they are facing a significant financial burden as it may take months for the lawyers to handle the business and sudden and tragic death. Your contribution, no matter how small, can make a significant difference in their lives. Those of you who have suffered through a painful loss know how hard the first weeks of shock and grief can be. Please help Urooj’s family by making a donation. Your emotional support and understanding during this difficult time will also be greatly appreciated. Urooj’s former Professor and current colleague at the Fullerton College Transfer Center, Jodi Balma, has helped set up a GoFundMe for Urooj’s family at: https://gofund.me/d3a32f0b
The Observer welcomed a guest editor, Urooj Naveed in September when she returned fro completing her degree in history. Urooj is also a graduate of Fullerton Union High, Fullerton College, UCLA, and the University of Chicago. She also has a certificate in publishing from University of Denver. Urooj helped start and run the Observing Fullerton Podcast in 2022-2023, and recruited and trained several volunteers in multi-media journalism.
“She is an amazing person, journalist, and editor. She will be taking an extended leave of absence to deal with this tragedy. She is 23 and already taking on so much responsibility for her family and facing such a devastating loss with grace and integrity,” said Saskia Kennedy, owner of the Fullerton Observer.
