Troy High School Football: A Record-Breaking Season

Troy High School’s football team has had a historic season, dominating both in the preseason and league play. Their hard work, talent, and determination have earned them the title of City Champions and the Iota League Champions.  Troy set multiple records that will be remembered for years to come.

Season Highlights:

  • Pre-Season Success: Troy started strong with a 4-1 record in their pre-season games, including victories over city rivals Sunny Hills (38-6) on Aug. 23 and Fullerton (33-13) on Sept. 6, giving Troy the title of City Champions for the 3rd straight year in a row under coach Michael Echaves.
  • Iota League Undefeated: The Warriors were undefeated in Iota League play with a 5-0 record, earning the Iota League Championship and continuing their dominance from the previous year. Their undefeated league record is the first since 2006.
  • High-Scoring Offense: Averaging at least 45 points per game, the Troy offense was a powerhouse, finishing 1st out of 75 teams in Orange County with 429 points scored.

Individual Records & Achievements:

  • Rudy Alcala: The senior quarterback set a new single-season passing touchdown record with 28 touchdowns, surpassing his own previous record in 2023.
  • Ethan Mundt: On Nov. 1, Mundt set a new single-game touchdown record with 6 touchdowns in a game, breaking the record previously held by NFL Derrick Coleman, Ron Blanco, and Brett Murray.
  • Vander Ploog: The wide receiver set two major records this season. He broke the single-season receptions record with 69 catches, a record that stood for 22 years, and also surpassed the single-season receiving touchdowns record with 16 touchdowns.

Defense & Special Teams:

  • The Warrior defense was equally impressive, finishing 16th out of 75 teams in Orange County for scoring defense, allowing only 180 points all season.
  • Cayleb Quiroz: The middle linebacker led the team with 65 tackles, ranking 5th in the Iota league for tackles.
  • Kellen Watts: The outside linebacker was the league leader in sacks, finishing with 6 sacks on the season.

Academic Excellence:

In addition to their on-field success, Troy’s athletes have excelled in the classroom, maintaining a team GPA of 3.4.

Looking Ahead:

This Friday, Nov. 8 at 7 p.m., the Warriors will face La Serna High School in the first round of CIF at Cal High in Whittier. Come out and support Coach Echaves and the team as they continue their pursuit of greatness!

With the team motto of Ubuntu (I AM because WE ARE!), it’s clear that Troy’s football team has not only been dominant on the field but also set an example of discipline, teamwork, and excellence.
