The Fullerton City Council is set to make a decision tonight regarding the future of the Walk on Wilshire program, following a three-month delay. The meeting will take place at City Hall at 5:30 PM, where officials will consider a recommendation from staff to discontinue the initiative and return the area to standard road use for vehicular traffic or expand the Walk on Wilshire to Malden Ave.
The program has garnered over 2,000 signatures on a petition advocating for its continuation. There are concerns among supporters that the City Council may overlook this public input. The staff’s recommendation contrasts with the public backing for the program, which aims to enhance walkability and create a family-friendly environment in the city.
City sources indicate that several design firms have submitted proposals to improve Walk on Wilshire and potentially establish it as a permanent feature. However, there appears to be a focus on the needs of vehicle traffic over the preferences of those advocating for pedestrian-friendly spaces.
Community members are encouraged to attend the council meeting to express their views and show support. Public comments will be welcomed from all attendees, including residents, students, visitors, local workers, and business owners. A guide is available for those unfamiliar with the public comment process.
Supporters are invited to wear green and bring signs to the meeting to visually represent their stance. The outcome of tonight’s vote will determine whether Walk on Wilshire will continue as a community space or revert to primarily accommodating vehicular traffic.
