The accomplished Park brothers, Alex and Wesley, captivated an audience of 154 at the First United Methodist Church this past weekend with their exceptional classical guitar performance. Transitioning from their roots as a piano duo to a guitar duo, the brothers showcased an impressive synergy while performing a selection of classical pieces, including Enrique Granados’ Intermezzo, Francisco Tárrega’s Recuerdos de la Alhambra, and Paulo Bellinati’s Jongo.
The concert opened with *Three Renaissance Lute Pieces*, a piece that highlighted the brothers’ seamless collaboration and impeccable timing. Their repertoire not only demonstrated their technical skills but also included solo performances that allowed each brother to shine individually, offering the audience a glimpse into their distinct musical capabilities.
As they played *Intermezzo*, the brothers infused the piece with an upbeat tempo that evoked the image of a curious child exploring new surroundings—a theme that resonated with the audience. Later in the program, their rendition of *Recuerdos de la Alhambra* featured a remarkable countermelody, adding depth and richness to the already intricate composition.
The concert concluded with the upbeat *Jongo*, a well-known piece among classical guitarists. The brothers maintained a vibrant energy throughout their performance, leaving the audience enthusiastic and appreciative, as evidenced by their standing ovation.
After the concert, the Park brothers expressed their gratitude to the audience and shared their thoughts on the event. “I’m surprised there aren’t more attendees given the quality of the performances,” remarked a valued patron following the show.
“I’m pleased that the audience enjoyed our performance. Such a strong response, and we wanted to connect with them on a musical journey,” Alex noted. Wesley added, “Solo performances are nerve-wracking, but it’s better for the audience’s enjoyment. It was wonderful to play close to home.”
The next free performance from the Fullerton Friends of Music will feature Nikolay Sivchuk on February 22, 2025, at 3:30 PM. He will present a Solo Bayan, known as the Russian accordion, at the same church located at 114 N Pomona Ave, Fullerton, CA.
