California Lottery Raises $2.25 Billion for Public Schools in 2024

The California Lottery reported that it has raised over $2.25 billion for the state’s public schools during the 2024 fiscal year, bringing the total funds generated for education since the lottery began in 1985 to $46 billion.

This amount marks the third consecutive year in which the lottery has generated over $2 billion for educational initiatives, according to lottery officials. Officials noted that sales from the recent Mega Millions jackpot contributed an estimated $78.8 million to public schools.

Additionally, California Lottery sales reached $9.27 billion in fiscal year 2023-24, surpassing the previous record of $9.24 billion set the year before.

The funds generated by the lottery are discretionary and can be used by school districts in various ways, including supplementing the general fund, attracting and retaining teachers, and financing after-school programs, among other uses.
