League of Women Voters of Orange Coast Calls for Participation in 24-Hour Economic Blackout

The League of Women Voters of Orange Coast, a non-partisan organization devoted to promoting civic engagement and informed participation in government, is urging its members and supporters to join in a significant upcoming event: the 24-hour Economic Blackout.

After thorough research into the non-partisan status of The Peoples Union USA, the league believes this initiative presents an opportunity for individuals to collectively demonstrate their influence and power within the community and beyond.

“The 24-hour Economic Blackout is our first initial act to show that we can make a statement,” said a representative from the League. “By choosing to refrain from economic activities for one day, we aim to highlight the impact of our collective actions and the importance of civic involvement.”

This event is designed not only to raise awareness but also to empower participants to reflect on their role in the economy and society. The league encourages widespread participation, signaling that true power lies with the people.

 WHY THIS MATTERS

~ Corporations and banks only care about their bottom line.

~ If we disrupt the economy for just ONE day, it sends a powerful message.

~ If they don’t listen (they won’t), we make the next blackout longer (We will)

This is our first action. This is how we make history.

  1. The 24-hour Economic Blackout is meant to send a message to corporations and banks, but will it actually create real change? The reality is that one day of reduced spending won’t shake the economy or force corporate giants to change their ways. Large retailers plan for fluctuations in consumer activity, and a single-day pause is unlikely to disrupt their bottom line in any meaningful way.

If we truly want to impact the economy in California and the nation, we need to focus on where change actually happens: in government.

    Why This Approach Won’t Work:

✅ Consumers Will Likely Delay, Not Cancel, Spending: People will just buy what they need the next day, meaning corporations feel no long-term financial strain.
✅ Sales Tax Revenue Loss Hurts Local Communities More Than Corporations: A drop in sales tax revenue directly impacts local infrastructure, education, and public services, while corporations continue operating as usual.
✅ No Direct Policy Demand: Without a clear, actionable demand, corporations will not change policies, and elected officials will not feel pressure to act.

A More Effective Plan: Call Your Elected Officials

If we truly want to fix what’s broken in the economy, we must hold our state and federal representatives accountable for wasteful spending and harmful policies. Instead of skipping a coffee or avoiding Amazon for a day, take action that actually forces change:

📞 Call or Email Your Elected Officials – Demand They Work for You!
🔹 Tell them to cut wasteful government spending – Our tax dollars shouldn’t fund projects that weren’t approved by voters.
🔹 Demand lower taxes and fewer regulations – Costly bureaucratic red tape is raising the cost of living and doing business.
🔹 Push for real energy solutions – California’s power grid is unstable, and restrictive policies have led to higher energy costs for families and businesses.
🔹 Hold them accountable for laws that increase costs on businesses and consumers – Excessive regulation drives inflation and hurts small businesses.

    How to Take Action:

    📍 Find Your Representative: https://www.house.gov/representatives/find-your-representative
📍 Find Your California State Legislator: https://findyourrep.legislature.ca.gov/
📍 Call or Email Their Offices: A flood of calls and emails demanding change will have far more impact than skipping a shopping trip for a day.

    • Your list of ideas seems to be to envision a government that doesn’t do much of anything. Energy policy? Industrial policy? Tax policy? If your goal is just lowering taxes and only spending on things voters somehow directly asked for… how does that address all the things government does and needs to do?

Maybe that’s fine for state government where we have progressive initiative process, but it doesn’t make any sense at all for federal policy.

  2. I am calling my representatives and I am also doing the Boycott – and not just for a day. I am shopping at small businesses and large businesses (like Costco) that stand up against Trump/Vance/Musk idiotic ideas and actions.
Demand end to attacks on innocent immigrant families, attacks on LGBTQ people, attacks on EPA clean water and other environmental regulations. NO to the forced K-12 school 1776 agenda; NO to the streamlining of oil & gas leases and pipelines; No to Musk/DOGE access to our personal data; NO to cutting Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security and health programs to those who need those programs.
Really just say NO to everything Trump/Vance have proposed and their shameful actions internationally too. Especially in their ideas that the US should own Gaza and all Palestinians should be removed to make way for resorts there – and that the Ukraine should give half its rare earth minerals to the US in exchange for peace with Russia – and that the US should own Greenland (and be in charge of its rare earth minerals) and more. What a series of idiotic ideas – these emperors have no clothes.
