In a decisive move against Republican-led efforts to tighten voting requirements, Representative Lou Correa (CA-46) cast his vote against H.R. 22, the SAVE Act, on April 10, 2025. Following the vote, Correa issued a strong statement emphasizing his concerns about the legislation’s implications for American voters.
“Let me be clear: Non-citizens are already barred from registering and voting in federal elections and would receive jail time or face deportation as a result,” Correa stated. He criticized the bill as redundant and warned that it could complicate the voting process for American citizens.
Correa highlighted specific provisions in the SAVE Act that he believes would create unnecessary barriers for voters. “This bill would bar American citizens from using driver’s licenses, military IDs, or Tribal IDs as proof of citizenship,” he explained. He also pointed out that individuals who have changed their names—including many married women—would be ineligible to use their birth certificates to verify citizenship. Furthermore, he noted that veterans living abroad and active-duty servicemembers could effectively be stripped of their voting rights due to the legislation.
The congressman emphasized that voter fraud is not an issue in Orange County. “On the contrary, Orange County has a notable history of voter suppression and intimidation, particularly in communities like Santa Ana, where profiling of voters occurred in our heavily Latino neighborhoods,” Correa said. He expressed a commitment to combating these historical injustices, stating, “I refuse to support any attempt to make casting a ballot by legal American citizens more challenging.”
Correa concluded his statement by reiterating his opposition to the SAVE Act. “This bill is nothing more than voter suppression disguised as election reform. That’s why I voted ‘no.’”
