A man died in custody after a confrontation with Fullerton police early Sunday morning at Lemon Park. At approximately 12:31 am, officers responded to reports of an adult male at the park, located at 701 S. Lemon St., who was allegedly in the area after closing hours and holding a smoldering cardboard box.
Upon arrival, officers made contact with the individual, described as acting erratically. As the situation escalated, the male became uncooperative and physically resisted arrest. In response, additional officers were called to the scene, and it took several law enforcement personnel to gain control of the suspect and apply restraints. During the struggle, the suspect reportedly bit one officer on the arm, causing injury.
The Fullerton Fire Department was summoned to the scene to assist. After a brief period, the suspect exhibited signs of a medical emergency, prompting paramedics to initiate life-saving measures. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was subsequently pronounced dead by medical staff.
The injured officer received treatment at a nearby hospital and has since been released.
In compliance with standard procedure following any in-custody death involving Fullerton Police Officers, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office has been notified. Investigators are currently conducting an independent investigation into the events leading to the incident and the circumstances surrounding the individual’s death.
The identity of the deceased will be released by the Orange County Coroner at an appropriate time. Additionally, relevant videos, recordings, and images will be made available within 45 days in a Critical Incident Community Briefing Video, as mandated by state law.
