The Fullerton Fire Department has taken a significant step towards improving community safety and emergency preparedness by deploying 12 Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) at key city facilities. An AED is a portable device used to treat individuals experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. According to the American Red Cross, bystander use of AEDs saves over 1,700 lives in the U.S. each year. A major study found that survival rates increased dramatically, from 7% without intervention to 38% when an AED was used.
This initiative, made possible through a generous grant from Firehouse Subs awarded in January 2024, aims to provide immediate assistance in the event of cardiac emergencies.
Strategically placed in high-traffic areas, the newly installed AEDs are intended to ensure rapid access when every second counts. Fire department officials confirmed that staff at these locations have undergone training to effectively use the devices, which are critical in saving lives during sudden cardiac arrest situations.
The AEDs can be found at several prominent locations, including:
– Fullerton Public Works: Facilities Shop, Supervisor Offices, Front Lobby
– City Hall: Basement, Community Development, City Manager’s Office
– Community Center: Senior Library, Gym Entrance, Grand Hall
– Fullerton Airport: Flight Center
– Hunt Library: Lobby
– Independence Park: Gym (installation scheduled post-summer renovations)
As the summer season approaches, residents are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the locations of AEDs and fire extinguishers in the places they frequent. Awareness is key to enhancing preparedness for emergencies.
