Pride, in the Name of
Speaking of color, every possible hue was flying in the annual Pride Ride, followed by Pride Fest at our Downtown Plaza. It kicked into gear when Wilshire turned kaleidoscopic and the masses paraded west, past cheering and waving observers along the way. Direct from the hard-working organizers, the day was “Much busier than ever. Bigger every year.”
Let’s take a walk around and see who was there….
The mood was up, up and away as music filled the air along with positive energy, smiles and hugs all around. Dad hugs, Mom hugs, kid hugs. Vendors, FREE photo booth, food trucks, and the beer garden of course, were busy right from the early going. Everyone we talked to and asked if they minded having their photo taken was smiling and welcoming. A day of Peace and pride was promised and delivered. Got there in time to watch The Gay Chorus, pictured here, all fired up.
Summer is Here
Or is it? Hold my sunblock. Our fabulous Southern California Summer of sun, surf and fun is certainly on the horizon (see you downtown on the first full day of Summer for Day Of Music). It was not quite here when the pre-season barrage of “Summer is here” ads kicked into high gear so cars and outdoor furniture, camping items, vacations and more summery stuff could be marketed. Flora and fauna know better. It’s only been in the mid to maybe high 70s, so what better time than now to take our own advice and take on our Arboretum, an absolute jewel of our town? We went there to ask the birds and the bees, the flowers and the trees, and to see if the fish were still in school.
Wow, everything was springing, from the desert to the pond to the vegetable gardens and the many critters who were introducing their new families to the curious humans taking on the variety of pathways. The time is now for plants to grow at great speed, so the edible gardens are exploding, the cornstalks are over 6’ tall, and virtually everything else is in prime time. Could be though, when this goes to print and “drops”, that we will find the air edging close to the summery 90’s, but for now, green is still the ruling color.
Photo Quiz
It has been estimated that 99% of all animals that have existed on Earth are now extinct. Not so, this unusual bird, who appears with an entourage at the Fullerton Arboretum daily. Don’t dally; these birds may head out at any time. Can you name this unusual duck, or is it a goose? And no, it’s not Bud.
