Teamwork — Border Station staff with San Bernardino County fire fighters
In a collaborative effort, the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) partnered with the San Bernardino County Fire Department over several weekends leading up to July 4th to intercept illegal fireworks at the Mountain Pass Border Station on Interstate 15.
The operation was a significant success, culminating in the confiscation of approximately 13 tons, or 26,000 pounds, of illegal fireworks. Firefighters issued a total of 105 citations during the initiative, targeting items that do not meet the “safe and sane” classification established by the California State Fire Marshal. All confiscated fireworks were securely handed over to the Fire Marshal for disposal.
California’s Border Protection Stations (BPS) play a crucial role in the state’s pest exclusion efforts, yet they also occasionally collaborate with various government agencies to address contraband issues beyond agricultural concerns, such as the illegal fireworks targeted in this operation. As the Fourth of July approaches, authorities remain vigilant in their efforts to ensure public safety by removing dangerous and illegal fireworks from the community.

And yet there seemed to be as many or more illegal fireworks ignited in Fullerton this year as were in past years.
Disagree. They were certainly going off but my block didn’t feel like a war zone like last year.
Matt – sorry to hear it wasn’t improved in your neighborhood – We heard a couple huge booms in the alley but overall it wasn’t as bad as prior years around here. And it only spanned a few days unlike past years where it went on for at least a week before and after.
A few years ago the 4th was so bad we couldn’t see through the smelly smoke that enveloped our block. It did sound like a war zone. We took to watering down our roof and property to prevent fire from the bits of fireworks flying through the air. Fireworks trash was all over the yards and streets.
It has been much better this year and the last few years in our neighborhood.
