Waste Collection Services in Fullerton Disrupted by Labor Issues

Fullerton’s waste collection services are facing delays due to ongoing labor disputes. Residents are advised to leave their trash carts out until service is completed. Those in association communities should consult their property management for specific instructions.

In response to the disruption, two temporary trash drop-off locations have been established:

1. Independence Park
801 W. Valencia Drive, Fullerton, CA
Open until 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 13th, or until containers are full. Only bagged regular trash will be accepted; recyclables, organics, hazardous waste, bulky items, and construction debris are prohibited.

2. Republic Services Disposal Center
2740 E. Coronado Street, Anaheim, CA
Open until 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 13th, for residential waste drop-off. Various waste types are accepted if kept separated.

Additional reminders:
– Street sweeping services will continue as scheduled.
– Residents using alley collection should utilize street parking.
– Violation notices for container placement and street sweeping parking enforcement are suspended during this period.
– Automated notifications have been sent to residents regarding potential delays.

The delays are linked to a union strike in Boston, while local Republic Services workers are supporting the strike by picketing. The company is working on plans to restore full services as soon as possible.

For further inquiries, residents can contact Republic Services directly at (714) 238-3300.

  1. In my opinion, the problem lies with Republic Services being a nationwide company and being too big. It would have been better if a California based waste collection company were to serve areas of Los Angeles and Orange County. If Republic Services is really based in Arizona, they should just focus on California, Arizona, Nevada, and parts of Utah.

The secondary blame can also be Teamsters, as they got their tentacles in everything. Not saying a trash company should not unionize, but rather their should be a specific unions for that type of labor and region. Not a big tent nationwide labor union with related regional chapters. If a strike happens with one chapter of a big tent labor union (like the one in Boston), other chapters will likely do the same affecting vital services like waste management. Like big business, labor unions become too bloated for their own good.

  2. Unions do help people – that’s why we have a five-day work week, overtime, and decent pay for union members. Perfectly reasonable that the local Republican Services would back up union actions elsewhere. That is how the have clout. Industries without unions have terrible pay and benefits. I think it is a crime to work full time and not be able to afford a decent living. All the profits from the work of people should not be going to the top.

  3. We shouldn’t tie ourselves to a company that could do this to us again. More companies to choose from in OC. The strike was in Boston for CS.

  4. These companies feel slimy on both sides (management and union). Both sides have history tying them to organized crime. Hard to sympathize with either. We the public are the only victims here.

  5. I agree with that idea that the company may be too big. Republic Services CEO is paid $13 million. Trash pickup is something we city people really need. I remember living in a rural area where we transported our own garbage but there were some people who just took the short cut of tossing it down a nearby hill. Apparently wage in our area is $16 to $24. They want $29 plus benefits. Maybe essential workers do need to be paid more especially in CA. It will be fun to see what jobs AI can’t do. Trash workers, plumbers, what else? Will be the high paying jobs of the future. Even now – if trash isn’t picked up – the city goes to pot.
