The Orange County Mosquito and Vector Control District (OCMVCD) will be conducting an Ultra-Low Volume (ULV) adulticide treatment to address an increase in mosquito abundance and the risk of West Nile virus (WNv) in the cities of Anaheim and Garden Grove. The applications will occur on July 30th, 31st and August 1st between midnight and 5 a.m. (see link to map below).
West Nile virus is primarily transmitted to humans through the bite of infected mosquitoes, which acquire the virus from feeding on infected birds. At present, Orange County has not reported any human cases of West Nile virus.
“Mosquitoes testing positive for West Nile virus are an indication that the virus is circulating in the community. Anaheim and Garden Grove are historically high-risk areas for West Nile virus activity. Conditions across the region are favorable for sustained virus activity during the warm summer months,” said Amber Semrow, Director of Scientific and Technical Services.
OCMVCD staff will continue to conduct surveillance, inspections, and control measures for mosquitoes in the area to prevent additional mosquito breeding. OCMVCD will also post WNv advisory signs alerting residents of WNv activity in the affected area.
“We urge residents to take necessary precautions to reduce mosquito breeding and prevent bites. Take charge of your yard by eliminating standing water and water-holding containers. Together, we can fight mosquitoes,” said OCMVCD Public Information Officer Brian Brannon.
Residents should take these precautions to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes:
- Dump and drain any containers filled with water at least once a week
- Clean and scrub bird baths and pet water bowls weekly
- Dump water from potted plant saucers
- Avoid transporting or sharing plant clippings rooted in water
- Drill holes or puncture containers to eliminate standing water
To prevent mosquito bites, OCMVCD offers the following tips:
- Apply mosquito repellent to exposed skin before going outdoors; reapply as recommended
- Wear repellent containing DEET, Picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus
- Close all unscreened doors and windows to prevent mosquitoes from entering your home or space; repair broken or damaged screens
- Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants and opt for lighter-colored clothing
