California Celebrates Farmworker Day, Honoring Essential Contributions to Agriculture

The California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) marks California Farmworker Day as August 26, an observance established by Governor Gavin Newsom in 2021 to recognize the vital role of farmworkers in the state’s agricultural landscape. This day, falling at the height of the harvest season, highlights the extraordinary contributions of the workforce that sustains not only local communities but also families worldwide.

In a special message released today, CDFA Secretary Karen Ross expressed profound gratitude for the men and women laboring in fields, orchards, dairies, and various other agricultural settings.

“Their hard work provides healthy, delicious California-grown food for 40 million Californians,” Ross stated, emphasizing the importance of farmworkers in a state with a farming industry valued at nearly $60 billion.

Farmworkers play a crucial role at the heart of California’s agriculture, contributing significantly to the state’s economy and rural communities. The work, often performed in challenging conditions, reflects a commitment characterized by resilience, skill, and a sense of pride. Secretary Ross emphasized the importance of investing in the well-being of farmworkers and their families to ensure a prosperous future for both agriculture and California as a whole.

The CDFA invites the public to view Secretary Ross’s heartfelt message honoring California’s farmworkers, spotlighting their indispensable role and the appreciation they deserve.
