The Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG) is inviting young adults to participate in its Future Leaders Initiative, a six-month civic leadership program designed to cultivate the next generation of planners, civic leaders, and changemakers in Southern California.
Designed for individuals aged 18 to 26 residing in Imperial, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, and Ventura counties, this program offers a unique opportunity to gain insight into the collaborative efforts of local and regional governments in driving sustainable change. The initiative aligns with SCAG’s ongoing efforts to support the Connect SoCal 2050 plan and emphasizes the importance of community engagement in future development.
Participants in the Future Leaders Initiative will engage in monthly virtual sessions, with an optional in-person closing event in downtown Los Angeles. The curriculum covers essential topics such as community planning, regional issues, policy development, and advocacy, as well as practical skills in sustainability and leadership. Each participant will receive a $500 stipend to support their involvement in the program.
Alisha James, the program coordinator, encourages potential applicants to seize this opportunity. “This program not only equips young adults with the necessary skills for civic engagement but also amplifies their voices in shaping the future of their communities,” James stated.
The program, which begins after the application deadline on November 25, 2025, strives to promote an inclusive and diverse leadership landscape within the region. SCAG has developed a Communications Toolkit to assist participants and supporters in sharing the initiative with students, interns, and young professionals.
