Assemblywoman Sharon Quirk-Silva (D-Fullerton), Chair of the California State Assembly Budget Subcommittee 5 on State Administration, hosted an official state hearing today to provide key updates on the progress of the Orange County Veterans Cemetery at Gypsum Canyon. The hearing brought together state leaders, local officials, veteran advocates, and community partners to outline the next steps toward establishing a long-awaited dignified resting place for veterans in Orange County.
“Today’s hearing was an important opportunity to update community members about the progress of the Orange County veterans cemetery,” said Assemblywoman Quirk Silva. “I am deeply grateful to the panelists, community advocates, veteran groups, and local elected officials who presented today. We remain fully committed to moving this effort forward with the care, integrity, and urgency our veterans have earned through their service to our nation.”
“Orange County has a long and proud military history. Establishing the Gypsum Canyon Veterans Cemetery ensures we honor that legacy,” said Assemblymember Avelino Valencia. “I am proud to continue this important work with Chair Quirk-Silva to deliver a dignified resting place for our veterans close to home.”
“Orange County has done everything required to move this project forward. We secured the land, dedicated $20 million, and earned the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ confirmation that Gypsum Canyon meets every federal standard,” commented Supervisor Don Wagner. “The only remaining step is for the state to take ownership of the property. As the VA has made clear, the state doesn’t need to wait for federal funds. Taking ownership now is what unlocks those funds. Our veterans have waited long enough. With Assemblymember Quirk-Silva’s leadership, we can finally get shovels in the ground and deliver the dignified, long-promised resting place our veterans and their families deserve.”
In the upcoming year, as Chair of Budget Subcommittee 5, the goal will be to transfer the Gypsum Canyon property to CalVet. Completing this land transfer is a critical step toward launching Phase I of the project and moving the veterans cemetery from planning to construction.
Assemblywoman Sharon Quirk-Silva represents the 67th Assembly District, which includes the Orange County communities of Anaheim, Buena Park, Cypress, Fullerton, and La Palma, as well as the Los Angeles County communities of Artesia, Cerritos, and Hawaiian Gardens.
