A rally organized by the Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL) took place in Orange County today, part of a series of nationwide protests addressing the tragic killing of Renee Nicole Good by an ICE (U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement) agent in Minneapolis.
Activists gathered to demand “Justice for Renee,” reflecting a growing movement that has seen vigils and protests emerge in cities across the country, including San Antonio, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and multiple locations in North Carolina. These gatherings aim to condemn the actions of ICE and call for accountability in response to what many describe as reckless state-sanctioned violence.
Community members expressed their sorrow and outrage, emphasizing the profound impact of Good’s death on her family, particularly her children (a daughter age 15 and two sons age 12 and 5).
“Our deepest condolences go to Renee’s family, whose lives have been shattered by this tragic event,” said one speaker at the rally. “We stand together to demand justice and an end to the violence perpetrated by ICE.”
The movement continues to gain traction as participants urge for systemic change and increased scrutiny of law enforcement agencies involved in immigration enforcement.
You can support immigrant rights in several ways: by funding organizations, contacting elected officials to demand accountability from ICE and policy changes (such as the DREAM Act), educating your community about “Know Your Rights,” participating in protests, and supporting legal aid for those affected, with a focus on civil liberties and due process.
1. Contact Your Representatives
When we allow ICE to act with impunity, we are all less safe. Tell Congress to conduct rigorous oversight of ICE and take immediate steps to curb its abuse.
Demand Oversight: Urge Congress to conduct thorough oversight of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to reduce abuses and hold agents accountable. This is supported by the National Immigration Law Center (NILC) and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).
Support Legislation: Advocate for bills like the DREAM Act to provide stability for immigrant youth.
Advocate for Policy: Encourage your representatives to back welcoming policies that protect neighborhoods from raids.
2. Support Immigrant Rights Organizations
Join Advocacy Groups: Support organizations such as NILC, ACLU, the Immigrant Defense Project (IDP), and HIAS, which actively fight for immigrant rights and against mass deportation.
Get Involved Locally: Find local groups that organize rapid response networks to raids and offer support to affected families.
3. Educate and Organize Your Community
Know Your Rights: Understand and disseminate information about citizens’ rights during encounters with immigration agents (e.g., the right to remain silent and refuse searches).
Host Conversations: Organize community discussions and share information through local media.
Document and Bear Witness: Safely photograph or videotape enforcement actions (following state laws) to document ICE’s role in these events.
4. Take Direct Action
Join Protests and Rallies: Exercise your First Amendment rights by participating in demonstrations against raids.
Support Legal Efforts: Help connect detained individuals with pro-bono immigration lawyers.
Accompany Immigrants: Provide support by attending ICE check-ins or deportation hearings.
5. Focus on Civil Liberties
Highlight Constitutional Rights: Emphasize that Fourth Amendment protections against unreasonable searches and Fifth Amendment due process rights apply to everyone in the U.S., not just citizens, as noted by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).
