U.S. Representative Derek Tran released a statement on the killing of Renee Good by Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Minnesota:
“The killing of Renee Good, a U.S. citizen, by a masked ICE agent is not an “incident”—it is a profound failure of justice and a grotesque violation of the values we claim to uphold. My deepest condolences go to Renee’s family and her child, whose lives have been shattered by the reckless, state-sanctioned violence of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
“I am sickened, though tragically no longer surprised, by this display of lethal incompetence. Under this Administration, we have seen a consistent, disturbing pattern: the escalation of force. This has nothing to do with the rule of law and everything to do with a culture of cruelty that threatens our communities rather than keeping us safe.
“This is not the America my family risked their lives to be a part of. It is not the country I swore an oath to defend when I enlisted. To see a citizen shot by masked agents on our own soil is a betrayal of the Constitution I served to protect. We have lost our way when “enforcement” becomes synonymous with lawlessness.
“We must demand immediate, uncompromising accountability:
- Investigation: the agent responsible must be held to the same standard of law as any other citizen. In this country, a badge is not a license to kill with impunity.
- Action: Congress must exercise its oversight power to rein in this Administration’s overreach and restrict the funding of agencies that operate outside the bounds of due process.
- Restoring the Constitution: Congress must assert its authority to enforce a system where the Bill of Rights applies to everyone, without exception.
“My heart is with the Good family, and my resolve is with the fight for a future where no child loses a parent to an Administration’s reckless disregard for human life. No one—especially those in power—is above the law.”
