The Southern California Youth Trumpet Ensemble, featuring five talented high school musicians, is making headlines this year as they prepare to compete in the semi-finals at the National Trumpet Competition. This marks a historic moment, as it is the first time a Californian ensemble from the high school division has qualified for this prestigious event.
One standout member of this accomplished group is Claire Sim, an 11th grader from Troy High School in Fullerton. At 17 years old, Claire brings her remarkable skills as the ensemble’s third trumpet, contributing to the dynamic sound that has propelled the team to this level of competition.
The National Trumpet Competition, which will be held at the University of Iowa from March 19-22, 2026, selects only the top 10 high school teams from across the United States. Claire, alongside her fellow musicians, is excited about the opportunity to represent California, a state traditionally overshadowed in the high school ensemble division by strong teams from Texas.
Joining Claire are:
Yuhwan Shin, a 14-year-old 9th grader from Northwood High School, plays first trumpet.
Ryan Choi, a 15-year-old 10th grader from University High School, takes on the role of second trumpet.
Changbyung (Alex) Lee, the 4th trumpet and team leader from Portola High School, is also in the 9th grade.
Brandon Yoon, another 9th grader from the Orange School of the Arts, plays the fifth trumpet.
The ensemble is enthusiastic about the journey ahead and recognizes the impact that community support can have on their endeavor. With their unique blend of talent, determination, and shared passion for music, the Southern California Youth Trumpet Ensemble is poised to make a significant mark at the National Trumpet Competition.
