Disaster Preparedness: Fullerton Residents Equip Themselves for Emergencies Through CERT Training

Recently, residents of Fullerton came together for a training program aimed at preparing them for emergencies. They participated in the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training, which teaches community members how to respond during a disaster. The program included local residents as well as students from Troy High School. Through the training, participants learned how to prepare for emergencies and respond effectively when disasters strike.

Classes took place twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from February 17 to March 5. Each session ran from 5:30 pm to 9:30 pm. During these evening sessions, participants learned how to handle emergency situations and provide help before professional first responders arrive.

The CERT program aims to help individuals become better prepared to care for themselves, their families, and their neighborhoods during crises. Throughout the training, instructors introduced different topics related to disaster preparedness.

One of the main goals of the program is to educate residents and businesses in Fullerton about potential hazards that could impact the area. Southern California is prone to earthquakes, fires, and other emergencies, so knowing how to respond safely and effectively is very important.

Participants learned how to identify hazards, create emergency plans, and gather supplies for disasters. Students from Troy High School showed significant interest and enthusiasm during the program.

For many, this was their first chance to learn practical disaster response skills outside a classroom. During training, they practiced essential techniques like fire safety, light search and rescue, and basic first aid. They also learned how to communicate clearly and work together under pressure.

A key strength of the training was its hands-on approach. Instead of just listening to lectures, participants worked actively in groups and practiced responding to simulated emergency situations.

These exercises helped them apply what they had learned and understand the importance of teamwork and preparation. By the end of the program, many students felt more confident in their ability to stay calm and respond appropriately during an emergency.

The training also built connections within the community. Residents and students collaborated, learning from each other and sharing ideas on improving safety in their neighborhoods. This spirit of teamwork reflects the main purpose of the CERT program: empowering communities so individuals can support each other during tough and unpredictable situations.

By the final session on March 5, participants had gained significant knowledge and a better understanding of disaster preparedness. They recognized the need to plan ahead and be ready for unexpected events.

Overall, the CERT training in Fullerton was a valuable educational experience for everyone involved. Participants developed practical emergency response skills and a stronger sense of responsibility toward their community.
With the knowledge they gained through the program, they are now better equipped to help themselves and others during emergencies.
