Two men left home for work and never came back.

Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, 52, was shot and killed by ICE agents in Houston on his way to work. He had lived in this country for more than thirty years. He was not the person agents were looking for.

Six days later, Joan Sebastián Durán Guerrero, 26, was shot and killed by an ICE officer in Biddeford, Maine. He was also on his way to work. He was also not the person agents were looking for. His three-year-old daughter watched it happen — still in her pajamas.

In neither case were the agents wearing body cameras. We refuse to let these names disappear into a news cycle. We refuse to let this become normal. So we are coming together — as people of faith and people of conscience, as neighbors, as those who believe every human being carries the image of the divine — to say plainly and publicly: No. Not in our name. Not in our city.

Please join us. Bring a flower to lay at City Hall in memory of Joan Sebastián and Lorenzo. Bring a sign if you have one. We’ll have some flowers on hand for anyone who needs one — no one should stay home because they couldn’t stop at a store.

There will be prayer. There will be singing. There will be a protest. There will be silence, too, for what words can’t hold.

Come as you are. Bring your children, your congregation, your neighbors, your grief, your anger, your hope.

Flowers, not fear. Presence, not silence.
