In this intense political season, many people tend to focus mainly on the “big” races for governor or congress. However, it’s important also to pay attention to the “smaller” races–who is running for local office. Local elected officials, like your city council or school board, make decisions that directly impact your life, and the life of your family.
It is the mission of the Fullerton Observer newspaper to keep our readers informed about who is running in these local races. Our political correspondant Jane Rands has compiled a list of who is running in the following important races: Fullerton City Council, Fullerton School District (both elementary and high school boards), and North Orange County Community College District Trustee.
Here are the candidates running in these races.
Fullerton City Council
In 2016, Fullerton voters approved a measure changing the way we do city council elections. We changed from an “at large” voting system (in which all residents vote for the same pool of candidates) to a “district” voting system (in which residents vote for candidates to represent their area of the city). Fullerton is now divided into five districts. Here’s the map.
In the 2018 election, only districts 3 and 5 will be up for election. If you live in district 1, 2, or 4–you’ll have to wait until 2020.
District 5
Here are the candidates who are running for Fullerton City Council District 5, along with their job. Click on each name to go to their web site (if they have one). Leading up to the election, we’ll have more information about each candidate as we learn more about them.
Sabrina Narain (Attorney at Law)
District 3
Fullerton Elementary School District Board
Like with the city council, the Fullerton Elementary School District is divided up into five areas, with “trustees” being elected by the residents of each area. Here’s a map of the district “areas”:
Incumbent Fullerton School District Trustees in Areas 3 (Northeast Fullerton) and 4 (Central/East Fullerton) each have one challenger.
Area 3
Area 4
Fullerton Joint Union High School District Board
The Fullerton Joint Union High School District has contests in Area 1 (La Habra and East La Mirada); Area 4 (portions of Southwest Fullerton and central Fullerton east of Bastanchury); and Area 5 (Rolling Hills and surrounding CSUF).

Area 4
Area 5
North OC Community College District
The North Orange County Community College District is governed by seven elected trustees who establish all policies that guide the general operation of the District (which includes Fullerton College). Student trustees representing each of the colleges also sit on the Board.
These trustees are elected by “areas” and the area which includes Fullerton is Area 6. Here’s who’s running:
