As the world around us continues to evolve, so too must our artistic endeavors. In light of this, we are thrilled to bring you an exhibition of bronze sculpture, a medium that beautifully embodies the very real notion of impermanence. This display invites visitors to delve into the nature of impermanence through the lens of process, material, creative expression, and the unpredictable nature of living.
The bronze sculpture dates back to the bronze age of 2300 BCE, when it was first used to create tools and other objects for survival. The bronze sculpture is created through the lost wax process, in which the original wax sculpture is melted out, leaving a cavity for molten metal to flow in. This exhibition, which takes on an added layer of significance as we announce the temporary closure of our Cast Metal Sculpture program, offers a unique opportunity to witness the impermanence of these permanent forms.
Logan, the curator of this exhibit, said, “Being my last semester within the Museum Studies Department and Fullerton College, It was an amazing opportunity to curate “Now You See It Now, Now You Don’t.” I was able to expose others and myself to the art form of bronze, showing the process that created the objects on display. Showcasing the vast range of spectacular, thought-provoking, and well-crafted work that comes out of the program by staff and students alike. With the bronze program undergoing construction and unavailable for the time being, we hope this brings the department into a new light and cast a new image for the art form of bronze.”
In a moment of reflection and contemplation, the aim of this exhibition is to embrace the timeless beauty and history of bronze while acknowledging a temporary pause in our program. This exhibition, aptly titled “Now You See It, Now You Don’t,” showcases works made by students past and present along with their faculty. We will have no bronze sculpture to showcase during the next student art exhibition in 2025.
Through a diverse display of bronze works, visitors will see how each piece represents a unique expression of creativity and craftsmanship. “Now You See It, Now You Don’t” promises to ignite dialogue and inspire contemplation as we rise to the challenge of acceptance.
We invite you to contemplate the fleeting nature of artistic materials as the Cast Metal Sculpture area takes its temporary leave, leaving our spaces bereft of its shimmering allure. We hope that the enduring legacy of bronze as a medium for artistic expression is reflected in its return as a practice on this campus.
