Candidate Endorsements – Fullerton School District

The elections are coming up, and with them are the many digital advertisements, mailers, yard signs, campaign events, and candidate forums. Yet, one of the most important ways voters find out and make decisions about who to vote for is through endorsements. If a trusted public official, organization, or expert endorses a candidate or an incumbent, that can carry much weight and indicate where the candidates’ loyalties align.

The Fullerton Observer has been compiling these endorsements for our local candidates. We have also published a campaign finance list in our early September issue. Soon, we’ll be publishing interviews with almost all of the candidates. Be sure to keep checking our website and print issues for these updates.

This list is constantly being updated, so please check back here for updates.

Fullerton School District

Trustee Area 2:

Hilda Sugarman (Incumbent)

Caleb Beller, Pastor & Parent: “For over 25 years, I have had the blessing of collaborating on multiple projects with the Fullerton School Dsitrict. Throughout this journey, one name has consistently emerged as a steadfast champion for teachers, students, and parents alike-Hilda Sugarman. In an era where countless agendas seek to influence our school districts, it is crucial to have experienced leaders who not only understand the complexities of education but are also deeply committed to advocacy. Hilda embodies these qualities and more. She has tirelessly fought for resources, support and opportunities that enhance our educational landscape. As we look toward the future, let us remember the importance of strong leadership in advocating for our children’s education. Hilda Sugarman has been that leader, and I cannot emphasize enough my support for Hilda and uplift those like her who advocate for the future of our children.”

Larry and Summer Houser, Founders of Fullerton Cares Autism Foundation, Restauranteurs, Members of Fullerton Education Foundation: “Hilda has always been a champion for all kids in the Fullerton School District. Her support for new technology and innovative and creative learning programs give our students opportunities that prepare them for successful future careers and leadership roles.”

Greg Seaborn, Former Mayor of Fullerton: “As a former Mayor of Fullerton and parent of three children who attended schools in the District, I am proud to endorse and enthusiastically support you for the Fullerton School Board.  I have watched first-hand your transformation of the District and the responsible inclusion of technology into the classroom.  When COVID-19 hit, our children were prepared to learn through technology thanks in large part to your leadership.  When federal, state, or local issues rise, you provide a measured, level-headed approach that reassures our community that their voice is being heard. Our neighborhoods are shaped around our schools and reflect the values we all hold dear.  I look forward to your continued leadership for four more years. On a personal note, I cannot thank you enough for what you have done for our families, community, and schools.  I believe you are the single greatest influence upon our schools and, as a result, we see greater regional job growth, real estate values continue to rise, and our community is made stronger. Without a doubt, there has been no greater leader in North Orange County than you.  The immeasurable legacy you have created will ripple through generations as a model for other districts and organizations. Thank you for your passion and sacrifice. May God bless you and your family each and every day.”

James Cho

Sharon Quirk-Silva, Assemblymember: “As a Sunny Hills graduate, James Cho served our country in the Air Force and came back home to raise a family. We’ve worked together to get Orange County residents health insurance and food assistance, and I’m endorsing him for Fullerton School Board because he has a track record of proven leadership and work in the community.”

Fred Jung, Fullerton Mayor Pro Tem: “The median age of Fullertonians is 35. We need leadership that has a lived experience of modern challenges. James Cho will the voice for necessary reforms to improve and enhance education in Fullerton.”

Shana Charles, Fullerton City Councilmember: “I’m supporting James Cho for Fullerton School District because his years in public service – from being a city commissioner here in Fullerton to his work with Orange County to serving our country in the military – have shown his commitment to improving our community. As a parent with a kid in FSD, he will bring that same passion for public service and fresh point-of-view to the Board of Trustees.”

Joann Fawley, Fullerton Joint Union High School District Trustee: “James Cho would be an excellent addition to the Fullerton School District Board.  He grew up in the area, went to local schools and is a Sunny Hills High School graduate.  He understands the experiences of the people in the Trustee Area.  James is a father whose children will follow in his footsteps and attend our local public schools.  James is dedicated to serving his community and the country.  He is an Air Force military veteran who still serves in the Reserves.  Additionally, he worked at the Pentagon. Now James is bringing the experience and perspectives necessary for his Trustee Area so that all students will benefit from a modern education to be prepared for their future success.”

Jesús Silva, Former Mayor of Fullerton and Teacher at Parks Junior High: “James Cho is part of the new leaders who are ready and willing to step in and take the rein. James is ready to move Fullerton School District forward!”

Sarah Spero, Teacher at Sunset Lane: “I’m supporting James Cho because our schools require leadership ready to meet the demands of today’s classrooms. I, like so many Fullerton teachers, are struggling to meet student needs. James is listening. He shows up at school events and cares about the daily experiences in our classrooms. He is committed to people-first decision making. James has my vote because, as a father of a student in our school, he understands student and teacher needs and is ready to help.”

Jen Nguyen, Sunset Lane Parent: “We have the unique opportunity to have a passionate parent represent us and the future of our children here in Fullerton. Not only is James Cho an active participant in our community, but he is impassioned towards the improvement of our schools and is invested in bridging the gap between the District and our communities. We have already witnessed his presence at community events and the impact of his willingness to roll up his sleeves for our students. He is a breath of fresh air and his outlook on education and his dedication would be a pivotal asset to our School Board.”

Robert Yee, Vice President of Sunset Lane Foundation: “I’m supporting James Cho because he shows up. Every time Sunset Lane parents ask him for help, from setting up for a school dance to handing out popsicles, he’s there. He’s helping us learn about what the District is doing, and he’s listening to us about what we want. We want someone who has a kid in Fullerton schools to represent us on the Fullerton School Board.”

Margaret Lim, Parks Junior High & Sunset Lane Parent: “It’s important to me that we have representation from a candidate who sees what the real issues in our schools are. It doesn’t matter to me how much money is raised by a candidate if it isn’t applied equitably and effectively in our schools. James Cho has a child in our school district, so I know he’ll advocate for the real things our kids’ schools need.”

Fullerton Elementary Teachers Association (FETA): “Your dedication to education excellence and community engagement has clearly resonated with both educators and constituents alike. We are confident that your vision
will bring about meaningful progress and positive change within our school district.”

Vanesa Estrella

Lou Correa, Congressman: “As a Fullerton business owner, community leader, engaged parent, and longtime volunteer, Vanesa Estrella is exactly who we need on the Fullerton School Board. Her experience and dedication to our kids will ensure that students always come first, every child has access to a high-quality public education, and that parents have a voice on the
board.”

Sharon Quirk-Silva, Assemblywoman: “As a former teacher, Fullerton Mayor, and current Assemblywoman, I’m proud to endorse Vanesa Estrella for Fullerton School Board. She has the leadership and dedication our students need and will ensure every child, especially the most vulnerable, have every opportunity to succeed. She knows our community and will be a strong voice for parents and our neighborhoods.”

Ahmad Zahra, Fullerton Councilmember, District 5: “We need engaged public servants who are genuinely invested in the wellbeing and safety of our children, and committed to working with the community to improve their lives. I firmly believe that Vanesa Estrella embodies these qualities and would be an exceptional school board member.”

Dr. Shana Charles, Fullerton Councilmember, District 3: “I’m supporting Vanesa Estrella because we need a Trustee who knows the community, listens to residents, and works tirelessly to uplift our students. She has shown her passion and commitment working on LCAP issues as ELAC President. Let’s give her the opportunity to make a real difference for South Fullerton.”

Joann Fawley, FJUHSD Board Trustee: “Vanesa Estrella is the right person for the Fullerton School District board. She has deep roots both in the community and public education. Vanesa and her family have lived in south Fullerton for many years and own a thriving business. Vanesa attended local schools including earning a BA with honors at CSUF. She has been an active member of the PTA and the English Learners Advisory Committee. Vanesa’s commitment to students, the community, and public education is why I am endorsing her. She will be a strong advocate and a great partner with FJUHSD.”

Shoshana Levin, FSD Parent, FSD Teacher: “Since meeting Vanesa, I have seen her dedicate a significant amount of time and energy towards schools and her community. She is already taking the initiative to find out what the schools in the district need, including students, teachers, school staff, and others in the school community. It is clear that she is passionate about public education and her community.” –

Misty Mendoza, FSD Parent, D5 Resident, Public School Teacher: “Vanesa is an established and well respected member of the Fullerton community, and is already a leader in several FSD parent organizations. Our district, District 5, has a 74% Hispanic/Latino population, many of whom are scoring below basic in the areas of ELA and math. Once an EL learner herself, Vanesa knows firsthand the challenges these students face. All this would be enough to get my vote, and yet there is still more. When our daughter was the victim of school violence, and bullying, Vanesa came alongside our family, and advocated with us for changes that would increase student safety. Her approach was not to point fingers, but to partner with administrators and other parents to find solutions. She is a true leader who shows up for her community. That’s why she has my vote.”

David Goetz, FSD Parent, D5 Resident, Fire Department Captain: “My wife and I live on a street in Fullerton where everyone knows everyone else. There are multiple families where all the kids hang out and ride bikes outside together. We celebrate holidays, birthdays, and even Fridays together. Cut to 10 years ago, it was nothing like that. But that’s when my wife and I moved in and were invited to the first Friendsgiving by Vanesa Estrella, our new neighbor because we were a part of her familia now. Since then, I have witnessed compassion, caring, and concern for those around her. She is never satisfied with standing idly by and hoping for change; she is the type to get involved and drive the change. She has been involved with her children’s education through PTA, their cultural enrichment of Folklorico, and countless other things that would win her the title of super mom multiple times. But she doesn’t do these things just for her kids. She does them for everyone, for her kids classmates, for the school, for all that she can. And now, with this opportunity and your support, she can be that force of change to help make sure that the needs of our children in District 5 are
being heard and addressed.

Organizational Endorsements:

Democratic Party of Orange County (DPOC): “The Democratic Party of Orange County is proud to endorse community activist and business owner Vanesa Estrella for Fullerton School Board District 5. Vanesa is, in every way, a daughter of her community. Her engagement with local youth through her folkloric performance activities show a passion for sharing the rich cultural traditions that binds a community together. As a product of local schools from kindergarten through college, her belief in the value and mission of public education is absolute. Her PTA activities and participation in school events demonstrate a drive to improve learning and a strong belief in a better future for students. Vanesa Estrella is just what the children and parents of District 5 need in a School Board member.”

Jimmy Elrod, Deputy Political Director of Western States Regional Council of Carpenters: “The Western States Regional Council of Carpenters proudly endorse Vanesa Estrella for Fullerton School District Trustee, Area 5. She understands the critical role of skilled trades in our community and is dedicated to advancing career technical education and pre-apprenticeship programs. We believe Vanesa will strongly advocate for the students, educators, and the hardworking men and women who build and maintain society. Vote for Vanesa Estrella–building a brighter future for Fullerton!”

Ali Monge, Executive Director of WAVE: “WAVE (Women for American Values and Ethics) is proud to endorse Vanesa Estrella for Fullerton School District Board of Trustees, Area 5. WAVE prides itself in supporting women running for office, especially first-time candidates and minority women, who have proven themselves to be extremely qualified and dedicated to their local communities. Vanesa is one such candidate. As a homegrown Fullerton resident, she has been active and visible in various areas of Fullerton life. She is deeply involved in the PTA and the school district's ELAC committee, is a member of the local business community, and an important figure in the arts and culture scene of the city. At a time when public education is under attack by extremist groups who sow chaos through unnecessary culture wars, WAVE has made it a priority to support candidates who know the real priorities of school districts: To strengthen our public school system in order to deliver equitable, accessible, and inclusive education to our children — a system that prioritizes our children’s mental health and well-being, that raises academic achievement levels, and that ensures a safe and secure environment for all learners.”

Jennifer McDonald, Chair of WIL: “Women in Leadership was founded in 1993 to empower dynamic and courageous
women candidates dedicated to guaranteeing full reproductive freedoms and keeping public school curricula science-based. With her deep connections to her community and the schools, teachers and families in the district she is running to represent, Vanesa Estrella exemplifies the type of candidate WIL supports. Her passion and purpose come
from her lived experience attending public schools as an English learner to then become a first-generation college graduate. In addition, Vanesa is dedicated to ensuring that CHYA (California Healthy Youth Act), with its age-appropriate health curriculum, is implemented in schools so that children can thrive now and in their future. WIL sees Vanesa as an ideal leader who will support educational opportunities for all students as a trustee on the Fullerton School Board.”

  1. 57% are proficient reading at there grade levels. Science and math are much worse. The old saying is you “learn to read and then read to learn”. Ergo 43% are left to a life of poverty. I must admit these people are doing a good job.

  2. The varied endorsements of the Area 5 challenger, Estrella, and the Area 2 challenger, Cho, are extremely impressive, especially Estrella who is challenging a fellow Democratic. Both Estrella and Talavera sought many of the same endorsements, and Estrella clinched them all, except for the teacher’s union, who unsurprisingly endorsed the two incumbents.
