The Gymnasium in Independence Park has been closed to the public for many years due to its deteriorating condition, making it unsafe for use. Senator Umberg was informed about this issue by Councilmember Dr. Ahmad Zahra, who formally addressed it in a letter.
The gym needs upgrades, and its closure has denied the youth and families in the area access to important health and recreational benefits.
The park also needs upgrades and has recently been allocated a $3 million federal earmark from Congressman Lou Correa’s office.
Additionally, $1 million in state funding for the gymnasium building has passed the first round of budget allocations through Senator Umberg’s office and is on the way to the Senate floor for a final vote.
