Thank you for researching contributions to campaigns!!! How do I find out about contributions to my Yorba Linda council members??
Patti – You can go to clerk’s office at city hall and ask them to show you the 460 and 497 filings of all current candidates if they aren’t online. That works for any city.
Hi Patty,
Yorba Linda provides some archived and current required 460 & 497 candidate electronic filings on the city website but not all.
The Observer checked out the Campaign Statements tab and found archived documents for candidates. Only one current candidate, Tara Cambell, appeared to have filings listed to date.
(Alternatively you can visit Yorba Linda City Hall Clerk’s office and ask to see the documents in person or make a Public Info Request.)
To see what is available online:
1) go to City of Yorba Linda website
2) click on Transparency in Government tab
4) scroll down to Election Documents and click
5) click on Candidate Log to find who is running and their 460 and 497 filings
6) click on Campaign Statements to see electronic filings for past elections and some for current candidates.
NOTE: Although the Candidate Log shows a link to 460 and 497 filings for each current candidate – unfortunately the links did not work.
Because the links didn’t work the Observer called the City Clerk’s office at 714-961-7150 for help and was told that Yorba Linda provides candidate required 460 and 497 filings for the current election only through a public info request. If the documents are available electronically there is no charge. If copies must be made there is a charge.
Either way the city has 10 business days to answer such a request. Since 497 filings are required for contributions to candidates within 24 hours of receiving – that two week lag seems to bypass robust transparency. No reason was given by the city as to why current documents are not posted online as ones for past elections seem to be. It is simply the current process.
To make a Public Info Request go to the website, click on Services and then on Public Records Request at the bottom of the left-hand column and follow the procedure.
Best,
Observer Team
As Fred Jung’s treasurer I am finding you have confused people (intentionally or inadvertently) when re-reporting the information available on the city website in a more complete form. [commenter included a link here. The Observer does not allow links in the comment section]
1) The city is excluded for contributions from donors who reside in Fullerton. This confused Truxaw and likely others to believe that information is missing from the 460 filed with the City Clerk.
2) The headline makes a comparative proclamation that “Jung has the most Contributions…” presumably in relation to Truxaw. This makes no sense as Truxaw has reported no contributions according to your report.
Both of these errors give the appearance of bias against Mayor Pro Tem Jung.
I think it would be appropriate to
1) run a correction and apology in your next print edition and
2) immediately correct those errors of omission and false comparison online.
In addition to volunteering as Jung’s treasurer, I also used to provide unbiased campaign finance reports for the Observer.
I think it would serve our community to be mindful of your bias for and against candidates and treat everyone fairly.
As I recall, that was the exact reason why you the Observer was started by Saskia’s grandfather.
Jane –
1) I, as the former editor for 22 years, wouldn’t call you a former 15-year Observer reporter though you did contribute several reports over some of those years and Thank you for what you did contribute.
2) nothing is biased in the report – info comes directly from the candidate filing forms and a link to the city elections page should have been provided for those who want to check. Candidates, like Truxaw, who make or spend less than $1000 aren’t required to file.
3) it is accurate that the majority of contributions to the campaigns of Jung, Dunlap, and Valencia are from out of town – though I do agree the new team working on the paper do need to tone down the screaming headline sizes.
