Congressman Correa Votes Against Attempt to Undermine U.S. International Standing, International Security, and Rule of Law

Representative Lou Correa (CA-46) voted on January 9, 2025, against (click here to read the full bill) H.R.23, The “Illegitimate Court Counteraction Act,” legislation that would undermine America’s international reputation, long-term interests, and commitment to the rules-based order and released the following statement:

“This legislation is misguided and badly written,” Correa said. “This bill would impose sanctions on supporters of the International Criminal Court (ICC), including many of the United States’ critical allies. It would also put at risk many American companies that provide technical support to the ICC—like Apple, Google, and others—and force them to relinquish their services, opening the door to companies of foreign adversaries to have access to sensitive data and put international security at risk.”

This bill would require the US to sanction any foreign person who cooperates with any effort by the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate, arrest, detain, or prosecute a citizen or resident of any country that is an ally of the US and is not a party to the ICC.

“Although well intended, this bill is poorly written and would hinder our international reputation, set back our long-term interests, and destroy the international rule of law,” he concluded. “That’s why I voted ‘no.’”
