CHARACTER BREAKDOWN:

All performers must be 18 and over. We are casting any and all ethnicities for all roles. All characters should have a British Accent (except for James and possibly Ladahlord).  Accents range from “Posh” to “Cockney” depending on the role.

LADAHLORD a mysterious character who seems to have a hand in the magical things that are happening. Though he may seem a bit off, he carefully watches over James, making sure James moves towards to a better life. Ladahlord also serves as a guiding narrator throughout the story.  Think of the “Leading Player” in Pippin. JAMES Any gender, any ethnicity, to play a small child. No taller than 5’5. A lonely young boy who lacks confidence. Having lost both his parents in a freak accident, he feels he belongs nowhere in the world. However, when given the right encouragement he becomes resourceful and innovative. A good friend. James is the hero of our story, on an epic quest to find a family of his own and gain confidence in himself. Should move well. Vocal range top: G5 Vocal range bottom: G3

SPIKER Gender: Female, Age: 30 to 60 James’ mean aunt. A thief and a scoundrel. Shrewd and opportunistic. James’s Aunts are the sort of aunts (or monsters) that you fear ever being stuck with. They take James into their home but only so that he can be their own personal servant. Spiker is the brains of the operation, and Sponge is more concerned with finding something to eat. Think “Edina (Sponge)” and “Patsy” (Spiker) from Absolutely Fabulous.  Should move well Vocal range top: E5 Vocal range bottom: F#3

SPONGE Gender: Female Age: 30 to 60 James’ other mean aunt. Also a thief and a scoundrel, but not nearly as bright as her sister. She often has her mind on food. James’s Aunts are the sort of aunts (or monsters) that you fear ever being stuck with. They take James into their home but only so that he can be their own personal servant. SPIDER Gender: Female Age: 20 to 40A normal spider who has become human-sized after eating a crocodile tongue. Her husband was killed and eaten by Spiker and Sponge. She is warm and friendly to James. Spider is a clever creature who becomes a fun-loving older sister to James.Vocal range top: E5 Vocal range bottom: G3

This actor also plays Woman with Purse and Reporter 1.

GREEN GRASSHOPPER Gender: Male Age: 20 to 40 A wizened grasshopper who has become human-sized after eating a crocodile tongue. An excellent musician. Has his eye on Ladybug. Grasshopper, the leader of the Insects, is ever the optimist and assumes a paternal role in James’ life. Should move well. Vocal range top: G4 Vocal range bottom: C3 This actor also plays Man with Wallet and Garden Guild.

CENTIPEDE Gender: Male Age: 20 to 40 An ornery centipede who becomes human-sized after eating a crocodile tongue. Hates humans, in part because Spiker and Sponge fumigated his family. Prickly and rude, everyone thinks he is a pest. Centipede may be a bit of grouch, but he is ever-loyal to the pack, and by the end of the story, he’s won over by James. James sees Centipede as that cranky uncle with a heart of gold. Should move well. Vocal range top: G4 Vocal range bottom: C3

LADYBUG Gender: Female Age: 30 to 55 A motherly ladybug who has become human-sized after eating a crocodile tongue. Respectable and classy, she has a warm, caring heart. Has her eye on Grasshopper. Ladybug immediately takes on a doting, maternal role in James’ life. Should move well. Vocal range top: E5 Vocal range bottom: G3 This actor also plays Matron Nurse and Reporter.

EARTHWORM Gender: Male, Age: 25 to 50 An earthworm who has become human-sized after eating a crocodile tongue. A bit of a scaredy-cat. He is neurotic and worried about everything but is very friendly and brave when called upon. Earthworm is a gentle spirit, although he can be a bit of a coward. Luckily, he gains enough courage to save the day by baiting some gullible seagulls. Earthworm looks at James as a brother figure. Should move well.Vocal range top: A4 Vocal range bottom: C2
