In 1964, the Fullerton Chamber of Commerce aimed to strengthen international relations by considering a “Sister City,” inspired by President Eisenhower’s People to People program from 1956 that promoted cultural understanding.

Today, the Fullerton Sister City Association (FSCA) continues this mission, working to connect residents with international communities through various cultural exchange initiatives.

Fukui:

Fukui, the capital of Fukui Prefecture in central Japan, has a population of about 265,000. The city faced significant challenges in its history, including heavy air raids during World War II and a major earthquake shortly after. Despite these hardships, Fukui has rebuilt and is often called the “Phoenix City” because of its transformation into a modern metropolis.

Fukui has a sister city relationship with Fullerton, California, established in 1989, which is celebrated with the planting of cherry trees at both the Muckenthaler Center and Fullerton City Hall.

A notable event in Fukui is the Echizen Historical Costume Parade, held every April during the Spring Festival. Participants dress as historical figures, showcasing traditional armor and kimonos in a lively downtown event.

Another major celebration is the Fukui Phoenix Festival, held the first weekend of August. This three-day festival features a fireworks display over the Asuwa River, traditional dance performances, and fun activities for children, highlighting the community’s resilience. Morelia: 

Morelia, the capital of Michoacán, is a captivating city located a few hours west of Mexico City. It has become a popular destination known for its beautiful architecture and rich culture. Since becoming a Sister City to Fullerton in 1965, Morelia has welcomed many visitors who share stories of its warm hospitality and authentic Mexican culture.

A highlight of Morelia is the Catedral de Morelia, famous for its stunning lighting ceremony every Saturday night. Nearby towns add to the city’s cultural scene with talented artisans creating crafts like copperwork, pottery, handmade guitars, and unique Christmas ornaments.

The partnership between Fullerton and Morelia developed naturally due to the strong connections many residents of Fullerton, and Californians in general, have with Mexico. In May 1965, a delegation led by Art Gratner, the first FSCA president, visited Morelia to establish the relationship. A reciprocal visit followed in July, where a magnolia tree was planted outside Fullerton City Hall to symbolize their sisterhood.

Over the years, the friendship between the two cities has grown, with citizens frequently visiting each other. This connection is valued by both communities, representing a spirit of unity that continues to thrive, just like the magnolia tree in Fullerton.

Seongnam:

Seongnam, South Korea, has become a Sister City of Fullerton, California, in 2023, aiming to enhance cultural and economic ties between the two cities.

Seongnam, located near Seoul, is the second-largest city in Gyeonggi Province, with nearly one million residents. It is known for its strong economy and lively arts scene, hosting major companies like Nexon (gaming), NHN (IT), Telechips (semiconductors), Kakao (software), and SK Chemical (eco-friendly solutions).

Cultural attractions in Seongnam include the Pangyo Museum, Seongnam Children’s Library, Land and Housing Museum, Seongnam Arts Center, and the Folk Craft Exhibition Hall. The city also has historical sites like the Namhansanseong Fortress, Bongguksa Temple, and Bundang Daegwangsa Temple.

Seongnam is also home to a professional football club, Seongnam FC, which competes in K League 2. This new partnership with Fullerton offers both cities opportunities to share insights and strengthen their communities.

Tollo: 

Tollo is a charming town in the Abruzzo region of Italy, about 16 miles from the coast near Pescara. Surrounded by beautiful views of the Adriatic Sea to the west and the Maiella Mountain to the east, Tollo has around 3,000 residents, many of whom are involved in its vineyards and olive groves.

A key feature of Tollo is Cantina Tollo, the fifth largest winery in Italy, known for brands like Colle Secco and grape varieties such as Montepulciano d’Abruzzo and Trebbiano d’Abruzzo. The town is becoming popular for wine tourism.

Tollo hosts various lively events throughout the year, including a re-enactment of the siege of the Turks on the first Sunday in August and an 80-mile cycling race each April, which is part of the qualifying events for the “Tour of Italy.”

In 2021, Tollo became a Sister City to Fullerton, California, honoring Tommy Lasorda, a Hall of Famer with ties to Tollo. With its history, culture, and food, Tollo is an appealing destination that connects Italy and America, making it a great spot to visit in the Abruzzo region.

Yongin: 

Yongin, located about 20 miles south of Seoul in Gyeonggi Province, is a city that blends rich history with modern attractions. Visitors can explore a traditional Korean village that reflects life from the 1400s to the 1900s and enjoy Everland, South Korea’s largest theme park. The city also offers outdoor activities such as swimming, sledding, and hiking.

Yongin has been a sister city to Fullerton, California, since 2004, and it is marked by a symbolic tree planting outside Fullerton’s City Hall to celebrate their friendship. A notable cultural event in Yongin is the Sam-go Mu, or “Tree Stand Drum Dance,” known for its captivating drumming and acrobatic performances. With various cultural events throughout the year, Yongin serves as an important cultural hub in South Korea.
