The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) will temporarily suspend service on the entire D Line (Purple) Subway for 70 days, starting Saturday, May 17, through Friday, July 25. This closure is necessary to connect the existing line with a new four-mile extension that will run between Wilshire/Western and Wilshire/La Cienega.
Service on the D Line will be halted at several stations, including Union Station and Wilshire/Western, although all other services at Union Station will remain operational. The affected stations also include:
- – Civic Center/Grand Park (B Line operational)
- – Pershing Square (B Line operational)
- – 7th Street/Metro Center (B Line operational)
- – Westlake/MacArthur Park (B Line operational)
- – Wilshire/Vermont (B Line operational)
- – Wilshire/Normandie (Station closed)
To accommodate riders during this closure, alternate transit options will be available. Those needing to travel between Union Station and Wilshire/Vermont are encouraged to use the Metro B Line, which will operate trains every eight minutes until 7 pm and every 20 minutes after 9 pm. Weekend service will begin at approximately 7 am with the same eight-minute frequencies.
For travel between Wilshire/Vermont and Wilshire/Western, Metro Line 855 Shuttle will provide service, aligning its schedule with the B Line. Additionally, riders can access further bus service via Metro Lines 720 and 20 along Wilshire Boulevard.
The closure is part of Metro’s ongoing work to prepare for the opening of the first section of the D Line Subway Extension Project, which will feature three new stations: Wilshire/La Brea, Wilshire/Fairfax, and Wilshire/La Cienega. During the 70-day suspension, Metro will connect the rail, communication, and power systems between the existing subway line and the future extension.
Metro encourages riders to plan their trips using popular navigation tools such as Google Maps, Apple Maps, the Transit app, the Moovit app, and the metro.net trip planner. Metro is recognized as the lead transportation planning and funding agency for Los Angeles County and is committed to improving mobility through its Vision 2028 Plan, which aims to enhance the region’s transportation infrastructure. Currently, Metro serves over a million riders daily across its six electric rail lines and 118 bus routes, using a fleet of more than 2,200 low-emission buses.

Why is it taking soooo long. They should work 24/7 and finish ASAP. So close the whole line again another 70 days when they finish westwood?
The purple line is only unique to 3 stations along Wilshire, ALL others are serviced by the redline so this closure means very little. the purple line is the only line that isn’t really needed until this extension goes online, finally giving it a reason to live.
