Fullerton audiences will be transported to the decadence of the Roaring Twenties when The Maverick Theater presents The Wild Party, Andrew Lippa’s dark, jazz-driven musical based on Joseph Moncure March’s 1928 narrative poem.
Directed by Mackenzie Griener, the immersive production places viewers inside a Manhattan apartment where lovers Queenie and Burrs host what they intend to be the party to end all parties. As the night unfolds and an eclectic mix of guests arrive, fueled by excess and Prohibition-era abandon, tensions begin to simmer.
Queenie’s attention drifts to a charismatic newcomer named Black, igniting Burrs’ growing jealousy. What begins as a night of music and indulgence spirals toward violence. By the time Burrs produces a gun and fires a shot, the celebration has devolved into chaos — leaving the audience to confront the fallout.
Originally an Off-Broadway sensation, The Wild Party earned multiple honors, including Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle and Obie awards. The show is widely noted for its high-energy score and emotionally charged storytelling.
The Maverick’s production invites audiences to become part of the spectacle, encouraging attendees to dress in their “jazziest” attire to match the 1920s atmosphere. Due to mature themes — including domestic violence and suicide — the show is recommended for adults 18 and older.
The Wild Party opens March 13 and runs through April 11. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm and Sundays at 7 pm. General admission tickets are $40, with $20 tickets available for students with valid identification.
Tickets may be purchased online at www.mavericktheater.com or by calling 714-526-7070. The Maverick Theater is located at 110 E. Walnut Ave., across from the Amtrak station in historic downtown Fullerton.
