Maverick Theater Brings “King Kong” to Life in One-of-a-Kind Stage Experience

The Maverick Theater and Staged Cinema Productions are thrilled to announce the return of their wildly inventive and original stage adaptation of the 1933 cinematic classic, King Kong.

This is not your typical straight retelling—instead, it’s a clever, lighthearted reimagining of Merian C. Cooper’s iconic film, brought to the stage by writer/director Brian Newell, the creative mind behind Maverick hits like Night of the Living Dead, Santa Claus Conquers the Martians, and Plan 9 From Outer Space.

A love letter to the original film, this production pays homage to the groundbreaking special effects that changed cinema forever. Just as Star Wars ushered in a new era of movie magic 44 years later, King Kong did it first in 1933—now, the Maverick Theater brings that same spirit of innovation to the stage.

Using visual effects techniques inspired by the film’s legendary stop-motion pioneer Willis O’Brien, the Maverick’s special effects team—known as Maverick Light & Magic— uses a backstage film crew to capture live footage of Kong on miniature sets, blending it in real-time with green screen footage of actors. The combined visuals are projected onto a large stage-wide rear screen, creating a dynamic live backdrop for the performers to interact with.  Audiences become immersed in the world of Skull Island and New York city. It’s an unforgettable theatrical adventure for fans of the original film and anyone ready to witness the impossible on stage.

King Kong opens July 10th and runs through August 9th. Performances are Friday and Saturday at 8:00 p.m., Sundays at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $35 general, $20 for students with a current I.D. Tickets may be purchased online at www.mavericktheater.com or by calling 714-526-7070. The Maverick Theater is located at 110 E. Walnut, Fullerton, CA 92832, across from the Amtrak station in historic Downtown Fullerton.
