Santa Ana activist says federal agents injured her during arrest outside federal building

Santa Ana resident and activist Jackie Cordova said federal agents sprayed her with mace, chased her, slammed her into a wall, and broke her tooth while arresting her early Thursday outside the federal building at 34 Civic Center Plaza.

Cordova, a U.S. citizen who monitors Immigration and Customs Enforcement activity, said she was conducting her regular morning watch when agents surrounded her at about 4:45 am on October 8, when she ran for help. She said they tackled her, injured her face and fingerprinted her while holding her in custody.

“They busted up my face; they busted my tooth. I have bruises all over my arms,” she said.

Cordova spoke to the press outside the building around 5 pm where dozens of protesters had gathered. Demonstrators held signs opposing ICE operations. The anger was palpable. The Voice of OC and KTLA reported that the Department of Homeland Security had not responded to its questions Thursday and that city officials had no information about the incident.

Cordova said the detention left her fearful about where agents might take her. “We are showing you how these agents do this every day in our neighborhoods,” she said. “I was afraid I wouldn’t get out.”

  1. Another citizen accosted by ICE. This has happened in Fullerton too. And among the non-citizens arrested are those who have status to stay in the country and the vast majority are hard working people who just want a better life. It is all so disgusting. I am ashamed of our out of touch government.
