The US, Qatar, and Egypt have spent months trying to mediate a cease-fire that would see the remaining hostages released. But the talks have repeatedly bogged down as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed “total victory” over Hamas, and the militant group has demanded a lasting cease-fire and a full withdrawal from the territory.
There was no sign of a breakthrough after days of talks in Egypt, and the negotiations move to Qatar this week.

The Oct. 7 attack on Israel massacred about 1,200 people, took another 250 hostage and, according to U.N. reports, there is “clear and convincing evidence” that women and children were tortured and raped (sometimes repeatedly). That context is important, even if you believe Israel is committing genocide in Gaza. Two things can be true. Point being, please deliver the data on both.
Brady – of course you are right to remind people about what happened right before the current killing of over 40,000 Palestinians. I think what is happening now is important to keep in mind as negotiations take place that don’t seem to be working. Neither the negotiations or the continuing actions by Israel are working to bring home hostages or stop the civilian deaths and unbearable living conditions for Palestinian civilians.
Actions like targeting homes, schools, hospitals, water and other infrastructure is unacceptable. Not allowing adequate aid in not acceptable. Killing aid workers unacceptable. I don’t want $20 billion in more arms sent. I want the US to refund UNRWA. I don’t want my tax dollars to go towards continuing what is happening.
Even Israelis are out on the streets trying to get rid of Netanyahu. It is terrible for everyone including the hostages. It is interesting that one of the largest protest groups in US is Jews for Peace.
Sharon, I agree with everything you said. I previously wrote a note on this site calling what Israel is doing “genocide” (which some took exception to). I still consider it genocide. But RE presenting information, it doesn’t have to be — and shouldn’t be — either/or. The Oct. 7 massacre is part of this story; I don’t understand any argument for omitting it, and doing so dishonors the victims of that particular attack, and distorts history, in my view.
Brady – I agree with you.
I am very concerned that nothing substantial is being done for the 70% of Palestinians civilians displaced and facing famine, disease and death no matter where they flee. I worry about the “talks” that don’t seem to even bring the people food or medical assistance. 40,000 is a lot of people dead.
I can’t imagine how either the Palestinian people or the state of Israel will survive this. How can you make peace with the country that has killed your family and destroyed your country?
Also concerned with what looks like possible expansion of the war with the Israeli assasinations in other countries.
I am disgusted that our country is fueling this war and continues to send weapons. Seems that alone is a huge bargaining chip not being used in negotiations
