The Fullerton City Council has adopted an urgency ordinance to bolster regulations on illegal fireworks. This ordinance introduces increased fines and establishes a zero-tolerance stance toward the use and possession of illegal fireworks within the city limits.
The urgency ordinance is to safeguard Fullerton neighborhoods from the dangers associated with illegal fireworks, which include the risk of fires, personal injuries, property damage, and disturbances to residents and pets, particularly those sensitive to loud noises.
Under the new ordinance, which takes effect immediately, the penalties for illegal fireworks have been heightened: offenders will face a $3,000 fine for their first violation, $5,000 for a second offense, and $7,000 for third or subsequent offenses. Additionally, the ordinance stipulates parental liability for minors caught using illegal fireworks, meaning parents or guardians can be cited. Property owners who allow the use or sale of dangerous fireworks on their premises will also be held accountable.
To strengthen enforcement efforts, the City is intensifying patrols in neighborhoods and responding promptly to resident complaints and tips regarding illegal fireworks activities.
Residents are reminded that only “Safe and Sane” fireworks purchased from licensed vendors in Fullerton are allowed, and only during the Fourth of July holiday from 10 am to 10 pm on private property. All other types of fireworks, including aerial and explosive varieties, are strictly prohibited under both state and local laws.
To celebrate the Fourth of July safely, Fullerton is hosting a community celebration in the Downtown Plaza from 5 to 9 pm, featuring live music, family-friendly activities, food vendors, and a professional fireworks display to cap off the evening.
The City encourages responsible and respectful celebrations, warning that violators will face immediate and significant consequences.
Residents can report illegal fireworks by calling the Fullerton Police Department’s non-emergency line at (714) 738-3165 or emailing ReportFireworks@fullertonpd.org.
