This winter, Chance Theater, Anaheim’s official resident theater company, will bring to life “Scrooge! The Musical,” an adaptation of the beloved classic “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens. Based on the heartwarming Albert Finney film, the musical features book, music, and lyrics by Academy Award and Grammy-winner Leslie Bricusse. The production will be directed by James Michael McHale, a resident artist known for his work on “Sweeney Todd,” with music direction by Lex Leigh.
Set against the backdrop of Victorian London, “Scrooge! The Musical” tells the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, a miser whose disdain for Christmas and lack of compassion lead to a lonely life. On Christmas Eve, Scrooge is confronted by the spirit of his deceased business partner, Jacob Marley, who urges him to change or face dire consequences. The narrative unfolds as Scrooge encounters three ghosts—representing Christmas past, present, and future—who guide him towards redemption.
The musical features a score that includes several memorable songs, for which Bricusse received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Score in the film adaptation. The production promises a blend of humor, drama, and uplifting messages centered on the themes of redemption and the true spirit of Christmas, although it does contain elements of death and the supernatural that may be intense for some audiences.
Director McHale expressed his excitement about exploring the communal aspects of personal transformation, stating, “This production leans into the idea that transformation doesn’t happen in isolation; it takes witnesses, challengers, supporters, and yes, even ghosts.” He emphasized the cast’s diverse talent and the goal of presenting a fresh perspective on the classic tale, with themes of greed evolving into generosity and bitterness giving way to compassion.
The design team for “Scrooge! The Musical” includes choreographer Niko Montelibano, scenic and lighting designer Masako Tobaru, costume designer Gwen Sloan, sound designer James Markoski, projection designer Nick Santiago, stage manager Jordan Jones, dramaturg Wylie Aitken, and dialect coach Glenda Morgan Brown.
The cast features a mix of newcomers and returning actors. Bruce Goodrich will portray Scrooge, with Matt Takahashi as Bob Cratchit and Megan Sigler making her Chance debut as Mrs. Cratchit. Other notable cast members include Corydon Melgoza as Nephew Harry, Winston Peacock as the Ghost of Christmas Present, and Sydney DeMaria as Miss Dilber. The role of Tiny Tim will be shared by Audrey Moore and Amy Sorensen.
