The American Civil Liberties Union and its regional affiliates regularly deploy field canvassers to neighborhoods to discuss civil rights issues and solicit donations, often using digital tablets to process contributions on the spot.
Affiliates, including the ACLU of San Diego & Imperial Counties, conduct in-person outreach as part of broader efforts to build grassroots support, educate residents about issues such as voting rights and free speech, and secure recurring monthly donations that fund litigation and advocacy work.
But civil liberties advocates say the rise in face-to-face fundraising has also created opportunities for fraud.
The ACLU of Northern California has cautioned residents to remain vigilant after reports that scammers have posed as charity workers in an attempt to collect financial information.
How Legitimate Canvassing Works
According to affiliate offices, canvassers may be staff members or contracted representatives. They typically carry identification and use electronic tablets to securely input donor information and process payments. Contributions are often structured as monthly donations, which can later be modified or canceled through official donor services.
Red Flags to Watch For
Consumer protection officials and ACLU affiliates alike advise residents to verify credentials before providing any personal or financial information.
Warning signs of potential scams can include:
- High-pressure or urgent tactics demanding immediate payment
- Attempts to conceal the tablet screen during transactions
- Requests to use unusual “tap-to-pay” methods
- Solicitation of sensitive bank account details in ways that appear improper
If residents are uncertain whether a solicitor is legitimate, officials recommend declining to donate and contacting the appropriate ACLU affiliate directly to confirm whether canvassing is underway in their neighborhood.
Donors are also encouraged to review bank or credit card statements promptly to ensure the amount charged matcheswhat they authorized.
The ACLU of Northern California has emphasized that while it conducts community outreach, it does not request sensitive financial information in a manner that should cause alarm. Residents who prefer to avoid in-person transactions can donate directly through the organization’s official website.
As door-to-door fundraising continues, officials say awareness remains the best defense against impostors seeking to exploit charitable goodwill.
