Music, Community, and Soul Shine at Jazz Vespers in Brea

An inspiring evening of jazz filled Live Oak Church on May 17 as guests attended a special Jazz Vespers performance benefiting the Fullerton Observer Newspaper. Though admission was free, attendees were encouraged to donate to support both future concerts and the independent community newspaper. $1,031 was raised.

The event showcased the acclaimed Ron Kobayashi Trio, featuring guest vocalist Crystal Clulee, whose captivating performance earned a standing ovation.

Jazz Vespers has long been more than just a concert series; it serves as a gathering place that celebrates the shared joy of music, lyrics and poetry.

From the outset, Kobayashi’s masterful piano work, complemented by the trio’s impressive musicianship, created a rich and soulful ambiance. However, it was Crystal Clulee’s powerful voice that elevated the performance into an unforgettable experience. Clulee’s ability to convey emotion, transitioning seamlessly from tender ballads to soaring crescendos, mesmerized the audience.

The concert also highlighted the vital role of local arts and cultural events in strengthening community bonds. In a time when independent journalism faces significant challenges, this event is an example of how music can galvanize civic engagement and support local causes.

The Fullerton Observer has a 48-year-long history of providing community-focused reporting and coverage of local events in Fullerton and Orange County. The Fullerton Observer, founded by Ralph and Natalie Kennedy, Roy and Irene Kobayashi, and many other friends in 1978, is staffed by local volunteers who create, publish, and distribute the paper throughout our community.  This venture is a not-for-profit one with all revenues plowed back into maintaining and improving our independent, non-partisan, non-sectarian community newspaper.
