The City Council has announced the cancellation of its upcoming meeting scheduled for May 19. This marks an additional setback for the Council, which has already been operating under a reduced meeting schedule. The cancellation comes after the majority of Council members indicated they would be unavailable, raising questions about the decision. Historically, individual members have participated in similar situations via Zoom, leading to speculation about the underlying reasons for this cancellation.
Some observers suggest that the mayor’s reluctance to face potential backlash from constituents ahead of the upcoming primary election for Supervisor may be a factor. There are also concerns that, with two members absent, the meeting could lead to a situation in which the minority members hold majority influence, which could deter participation.
In place of the official meeting, a grassroots “community” meeting is set to take place on the lawn in front of City Hall at the regular meeting time of 5:30 pm on Tuesday. The gathering aims to provide a platform for citizens frustrated by recent actions and decisions made by the Council majority. Organizers hope the forum will facilitate both spirited discussion and meaningful dialogue about pressing issues currently facing the city.
Residents recall the previous Council meeting as particularly tumultuous, suggesting that tensions may continue to simmer during this community event. It is expected to draw a lively crowd as constituents voice their concerns and seek clarity on the Council’s direction.

A “Community Council” with no power or authority to do anything. Useless.
To so called Fullerton Voter –
There would be nothing good in Fullerton without community getting together and making officials do the right thing – for instance we would not be saving the historic Fox Theater (although that is taking some time), we would not be saving open space in Coyote Hills, we would not have Fullerton’s great trail system and parks, we would not have the new UP Trail, we would have no affordable housing (though that still needs improvement), and much more.
Plus some truly awful ideas would have happened had the community not come out against it – for instance we would have a giant flour mill as tall as Disneyland Matterhorn spewing pollution and stinking up the town across from Amerige Heights, we would have a giant office building instead of the museum center and plaza on Wilshire, we would have a privatized public library, we would have had to pay for the McColl dump site cleanup instead of having the polluting oil companies do it – and much more.
I caught the tail end of the event, and while that doesn’t qualify me to comment much on it, I couldn’t help but notice the professionally printed large anti-Fred Jung banner hung prominently behind the speaker area on city hall property, as well as several matching lawn signs (reading “Fraud Jung”). The signs indicated that they had been paid for by the Fullerton Forward PAC (but didn’t, as I believe is required, reveal the major donors to the PAC).
I don’t know who organized the event, but it was either planned as a campaign event or was allowed to be hijacked by those opposed to Mayor Jung’s candidacy for OC Supervisor. I hope the Observer (whose editor was one of the public speakers) will include these facts in its coverage.
I really enjoyed this event. It was great to make ‘public comment’ without feeling the disdain and condescension from the council majority.
Matt – Saskia, the editor of the Fullerton Observer was not a speaker at the event and had nothing to do with organizing it. She was there to report on the event when someone said she didn’t know where to get information about what’s happening in Fullerton. So Saskia did get up to let her know where to find information about Fullerton from a couple sources plus the online and hardcopy Fullerton Observer.
The Community Town Hall meeting was held at the same time as the regular council meeting would ordinarily be held but unfortunately the council majority – which includes Jung – has cancelled numerous meetings. The event brought out residents not happy with that decision and others made by the council majority – especially when the city is facing major challenges.
Not surprising that some of the attendees were lobbying against Jung’s campaign for OC supervisor (though personally I highly dislike both the “Fraud Jung” and “Bad Trout” signs – I guess that is free speech)
Hi Sharon K,
Where there “Bad Trout” signs up at this particular event?
Brian – not that I know of. But I sincerely wish people would concentrate on the actions of each candidate instead of putting out “Fraud Jung” or “Bad Trout” signs. I really dislike the lies in the literature sent to homes and the negative advertising that goes on against opposing candidates. I can’t believe it works to persuade voters. Makes me sick.
Sharon, the event’s emcee, according today’s Observer story, was the Executive Director of the Fullerton Forward PAC, who paid for the anti-Jung signs and the big banner. That’s not “some of the attendees,” that’s the person emceeing the meeting.
