What happens when an underfunded theater company takes on one of the greatest comedies in theatrical history with more ambition than resources? The answer is The Servant of Two Masters, presented by Electric Company Theatre (ECT), November 2–17, 2026, at the Muckenthaler Cultural Center in Fullerton.
Directed by ECT Co-Artistic Director Brian Johnson and starring Bobby Gonzalez as the irrepressible Truffaldino, this ECT-centric adaptation brings a fresh, self-aware twist to Carlo Goldoni’s classic comedy, celebrating the resourcefulness, resilience, and sheer determination of theater artists who refuse to let a limited budget stand in the way of a good show.
At the center of the madness is Truffaldino, played by Bobby Gonzalez, a servant whose decision to work for two masters sets off a chain reaction of mistaken identities, romantic complications, and escalating misunderstandings. Truffaldino’s desperate attempts to keep both employers happy provide the engine for Goldoni’s fast-paced comedy, while ECT’s self-deprecating framework adds another layer of hilarity: a troupe of actors doing everything in their power to make the magic of theater happen, even when the odds (and the budget) are stacked against them.
First performed in 1746, Goldoni’s The Servant of Two Masters remains a cornerstone of physical comedy and commedia dell’arte, the Italian theatrical tradition known for its stock characters, improvisational spirit, and exuberant physicality. The result is a celebration of the creative spirit: a reminder that theater is not about how much money you have, but what you can make happen with what you have.
