Honoring contemporary creative movements throughout the state, the Brea Gallery proudly presents the 39th annual Made in California exhibition through June 23rd, 2024.

For nearly four decades, this annual juried exhibit has featured artwork from an extensive variety of mediums and explored creative movements happening in California. Made in California showcases artists in all stages of their careers and offers them a chance to compete for several awards, including the coveted solo show opportunity. A free opening reception for Made in California will occur on Saturday, April 27th, from 5 – 7 p.m. with artists, food, and live music.

This year’s exhibition was juried by Dr. Megan Debin, an art history professor and supporter of the Brea Gallery. Debin responded to the call for art, saying, “I am honored to be participating as a juror and impressed by the caliber of work being created by artists in California.”

Juror Dr. Debin and a panel comprised of Brea Gallery Director Katie Chidester and Curatorial Staff selected over 100 pieces of art for the exhibition. Over $4,000 in cash prizes for awards, including First, Second, Third Place, Juror’s Choice, Staff Picks, and more, will be handed out during the exhibition. Guests are given the opportunity to vote for their favorite, awarding a lucky artist the title of “Popular Choice” with a prize of $100.

“Each year, this exhibition grows larger and more competitive – it remains the single biggest source of future partnerships for the Gallery; we meet so many new people and are introduced to several new and emerging artists.”

Unique to typical juried exhibitions, Made in California also includes a highly coveted Solo Show opportunity. Multidisciplinary artist Karima Cammell is this year’s recipient of this valuable opportunity with her show, “The Light Gets In.” Dr. Debin remarks about the solo show selection, “What do you expect from an art historian? Obviously, I appreciate the art historical references. I am fascinated by the various materials – from stained glass to textiles – and techniques like egg tempera painting.”

Including paintings, stained glass, and tapestries, the solo exhibition celebrates our times with a cathedral-style twist. Cammell notes, “The collection reflects modern anxieties, with images of wealth disparity, extinction fears, and isolation while exploring the paradox of tragedy and beauty.” Dr. Debin adds, “The artist uses natural pigments and traditional, historic techniques to create fantastical worlds populated by mystical creatures and natural beauty that anyone can appreciate. Her work examines themes of courage, perseverance, and respect for the natural world, important reminders for modern existence.”

Additionally, the gallery will feature a select number of artists from the show to present Instagram takeovers, behind-the-scenes blog posts, and the popular FreshAIR {Artist in Residence} program throughout the exhibition.
